So to get at that, you pull the trim above the glove box, and then just pull the hvac out?

Fixed nagging rattle when going over bumps

Steering wheel rattles when going over bumps.
Took it to indy a few times and they couldnt isolate problem.
Thought its some wire connecting to airbag or the electronic control buttons.

But when fixing the squeaking turn problem I found that the speaker underneath the footwell was loose. INteresting how sound travels and got me confused.

Pushed it back in and all was fine.

BTW the steering squeak fix was simply to put lithium grease over the steering shaft where it touches some plastic bushings.

Just loosen 3 screws underneath the footwell above pedals and pull out the cover and you will get a good visual.

5 min job tops.

What did you do to have it fixed?

Yes it does. It has been going on for the last 3 months. I took it to the dealer, but they said that since the noise is not consistent, they can not fix it. The worst part is that I live 3 hours from the dealer, and took the care there twice without any luck.
Please let me know what you did to fix the noise. When I press from above and below the steering wheel, and change the position of the wheel, the noise disappears temporarily. I am thinking of taking my 2012 BMW 335i to a local mechanic.

Help, rattle coming from steering wheel

I have a 2012 BMW 335i, and there is a noise coming from the steering wheel especially at low speeds on mildly rough asphalt.
I went to the dealer many times, and none even investigated it further until the noise was more consistent.
It is driving me crazy...
The rattle only gets better temporarily if I press above and below the wheel, and move it up or down. It comes back later though.
Please show me a way to have this fixed, I am thinking of taking the car to a local mechanic that fixes foreign cars.

Rattles are the hallmark of the three series- especially the coupe and hardtop convertibles.

My suggestion to you is to just try to get used to it, and accept it as one of the many charms of the vehicle.

Otherwise, you'll go completely bat shit.

It is only the beginning, my friend.

You have those bat ears though... You could hear a pin drop at a Rammstein concert.

Yeah, I have been lucky. We have mostly good roads and I generally don't hammer on it much. I guess it finally caught up to me.

Hahaha!! Come to think of it I do hear every single damn sounds in everyday life- one day I'll complain that I can't hear a damn thing though, so I should probably enjoy it.

In my old VW CC, I had a pen in my hand, and was writing a post-it note to myself, to put on the dash. When I went to stick it on the cluster, I reached through the steering wheel. The pen was knocked out of my hand and it slid along the top of the steering wheel cover and right into the little hole. I probably could not have repeated how this happened if I tried a million times.

But for the rest of my ownership, I could not, for the life of me, get that damn pen out of there... At only certain rpms, I could hear that blasted pen rattle. Talk about annoying. Fortunately at cruise on the freeway, it didn't rattle.

Honestly, one of the reasons I sold it. See the thread about the guy who got a quarter suck in his door The other was it had 109k miles in three years, when I saw my bullet on the lot. It was a good car though... I kind of miss it. But then I get in my e92, and that feeling evaporates.

I found out one of the strut to cowl braces wasn't tight. Tightened it up and the rattle went away.

Insert success kid meme here..

I have something similar on my '08. Started to notice that if stopped at a light, if I did minor side to side turns of the wheel, I could feel a "clunk" through the wheel. I looked today, and same deal up and down. If I grab the steering shaft under the hood, and wiggle it, I get that same clunking noise.

With all the crap under the hood, it's hard to get right in there to see where on the shaft the issue is. Is this "normal" to have noise when wiggling the steering shaft? Not sure if it's loose on the rack, or something with the universal joints on it.

To check, apply pressure to the dash directly in front of the gauge cluster while going over a bump that normally creates the rattle. If the noise disappears, this is how you may be able to fix it!

Warning: I strongly recommend removal of the steering wheel to allow you to properly fix this problem and prevent damage to the delicate gauge cluster.

1. Remove the steering wheel by following the appropriate instructions in the DIY section of the forum.
2. Carefully remove the 2 torx bit screws on the top of the gauge cluster.
3. I recommend putting a microfiber cloth on the dash and steering wheel in front of the gauge cluster to prevent scratching it. After the screws are removed, rotate the cluster toward the floor.
4. Remove the electrical attachment on the back of the cluster.
5. As shown in the attached pictures, apply two small pieces of some adhesive backed felt or velcro to act as a buffer between the two surfaces. Be careful to not apply something too thick or it will interfere with the fit of the gauge cluster when mounted back into the dash.
6. Reassemble and enjoy!

I assume that over time, the cluster settles onto the metal clips and then starts to rattle. This creates a nice buffer.
I think I have this similar rattling. It tends to happen when driving at low-mid speed, sounds like comes from behind the instrument cluster, and it goes away if I apply pressure to spots I indicated in the below picture. You think it is same as what you had? Just want to get some sort of positive confirmation before taking the steering wheel off and all that... Really hope this is it, has been so annoying...

I searched the forums but havent found anything on the topic.

Anyone else experience this or have a fix?

I've got the exact same issue, did you manage to identify the culprit?

Make sure braces from struts to cowl are tight.
