that is the right photo buddy, u have an AFE u should know what that is. is the picture of the filter mount on the heat shield. as you can see the mount is not properly installed and is blocking a lot of the space to where the air is supposed to be entering smoothly

So i've installed this 2 days ago and I noticed I was getting irregular acceleration when going at WOT. Ive heard of this topic so Idouble checked and everything is installed correctly.
but today i was fully loaded and i've experienced huge loss in torque while going uphill. Im really thinking about taking it off Since I didnt expect any gain from it but torque loss? While I was checkng everyhing I noticed that the round seal that went around the MAF was squeezed and maybe it wasnt sealed properly so Iremoved it and reinstalled it. Ill see tomorrow if its better. Really deceiving cause the sound is amazing. And yeah the round thing is placed the right way.

you were fully loaded? meaning you had a lot of people in the car? no wonder you felt loss in power.... lots of weight will do that. Or did you mean something different by fully loaded?

If the MAF isn't sealed properly the car is gonna lose pretty much all of its performance.

Loaded like 4 people on board. I know the weight will have something to do but I am comparing apples with apples w/ aFe... I take that route very often.
In the instructions, they tell to put the little foam seal but i'm pretty sure the OEM oring seals properly without anything else....ill try to remove the foam ring I think.

Refixed the MAF before going for a test drive. Already see some improvements, but i'm gonna have to re-test with everybody in the car.
I still feel some ackward "boosts" when going at WOT; I say "boost" not because its more powerful but it feels like the intake is getting more air on those short periods (1 sec. top each) and goes back to normal. Something is definitely going wrong. I will try to completely remove the foam oring that aFe ask us to put between the MAF and the intake tubing and see what happens. My next step is to remove everything and restart from scratch. The installation process is pretty simple but there is something wrong either with the installation OR the MAF. If everything fails; this is going back to the shop. Anybody experienced anything like this before?

That "boosting" is the intake air sucking the MAF down hard enough to get a solid seal. Think of it this way, if you had a leak in the hose to your household vacuum, you would notice its not picking up things with as much strength as it used to, right? Same applies to an engine. If the vacuum isn't fully sealed, you will lose performance. Either way you're still getting a leak and the MAF isn't liking it at all.

Its weird that i'm the only one having this kind of issue since the leak (if leak there is) is caused by the foam oring you have to put according to aFe instructions. Also its causing the MAF to be shallower in the tubing for a couple millimeters; because of the ring too. If the ring is really in cause, everybody that have that intake would have experienced the same kind of issue I do. But it doesnt seem to be the case...

I never used their ring and my car runs fine. The MAF fits fine without it. Oh and I had to use my own screws for the MAF too because they ones provided by AFE couldn't be tightened. |

The more I think about it; the more i'm sure its the issue (I'm at work right now so I cant know for sure)...
Because I only feel the full power of the car while being at +/- 5500rpm when is sucks so much air that it seals the gap between the MAF and the tubing. That would also explain my torque loss while being heavy and going uphill. I seriously hope that's the issue. "Crossing fingers"

And you guys didnt tell me that before? ;p
Just got out of the office and bought a screwdriver and fixed it right in the office's garage so I can test it as soon as I get out of here. Also I got a box in the mail today and I THINK its a box coming from my man Gavin. So I think i'm gonna take some time off to make it to the exhaust shop

Definitely a great find and thanks for sharing this with the community. It just makes me wonder how many kits were installed incorrectly and of those how many were claiming loss in power.

i tend to think most open filters are less efficient than stock. but these 2 threads now have me undecided. both e60 m5, one with gains and one with loss:

I think it fixed the problem. It even changed the sound; no doubt the engine wasnt breathing right.
I still have those little bumps in acceleration, but they are less noticeable and they happen only in first or second. So my guess is that maybe it have something to do with the PBX, but as it is now, I can deal with that. I'm gonna go with a tune someday within a year so its only temporary. Thanks for the help guys.
