Cheap Exotic Cabs...

Hello all,

Life is dealing with me pretty harshly lately, aside from the problems that were already present at the last Northern Meet, I now have a few more legal battles, yet another immediate family member battling cancer and some other 'orrible stuff.

I am only 26 and I feel like this is all quite unfair. However, its brought me to the conclusion that an early midlife crisis is needed.

I want something to run alongside the BM.

Now then, I always wanted a VX220 but I am fat, sweaty and getting old. People will look at me funny and I cant help but feel that being so large I will undoubtedly compromise the cars fun factor!

So I thought 350z but then I remember that the Roadster is hideous (Sorry Roger) and not my cup of tea compared to the Coupe which is looooovely.

Anyway, my Audi S4 was cool, but slow, and an RS4 doesnt warrant the extra money in my opinion...

So here we are left with Exotica only...

So I looked at Maserati Spyders - and they are definately an option. I test drove one in blue with white leather (I can live with pimp) with only 5000 miles on the clock for about £25,000 and I really liked it, however this really seems like the correct moment to be looking at Porsche 911;s.

My budget is about £25,000 and I really really am insisting on a Convertible just so you know!!

I also want something newish, and not ridiculously hard to drive or temperamental.

The kind of Porsches I am looking at have been the 996 911 Carrera... From the research I have done, and believe me I am confused as hell about the C, the C2 the C4 and then the S variants thereof..

Anyway, it looks like in convertible form, there is only the C2 or the C2S?

I cant tell whether I have manual or auto options (lots of auto, no manual so far) and I would just like advice about all this stuff really...

Is the C2S going to satisfy next to the monstrosity that is an Evolve 335D?

Surely it has enough finesse etc to deliver me to happiness, and perhaps it has the noise etc I have been missing?

Anyway, opinions would be nice!

Cheers
Matt

In short, yes. Personally I'd go for an earlier 993 if you can find one in budget. The air-cooled 911 experience is something you must try once in your life and the 996 doesn't look the real-deal sharing, as it does, many Boxster details. No tiptronic under any circumstances and it will be a whole lot more enjoyable than a Maser which will bleed you dry. Plenty of really good indys in the Porsche world too.

Sorry to hear about your problems Matt but hopefully a new purchase will make you feel a little better!

I've driven a fair few different cars, and the C2S cab is nice albeit underpowered (IMHO), especially compared to your current steed. If your only looking for decent handling then it's a great car... I just don't 'feel' the interior on the 996, looks too dated compared to the 997, again, IMHO.

Saying that, I really would like an S2000 for the wind in the hair experience. Other than that, for that price range (and discounting the 350) there aren't a great amount of decent handling larger cabs around that fit an enthusiastic drivers criteria.... Except an E46 M3 Cab...

Yeah I have ummed and ahhed over M3 Cabs, but I have decided against it... I had an M3 and the only thing that could have made it better would be to chop the lid off, but for some reason I still feel like I have been there...

The S2000 on the other hand is a great prospect, and something I had momentarily forgotten about despite nearly buying one several times.

I bet bang for buck that might put a smile on my face you know.

I bet! Funnily enough I was looking at them the other day. My only niggle has always been the lack of low end grunt, but I was looking at the plethora of supercharger options available for them now and there's sooo many options that seem reliable and give another 80+hp with plenty of torque... definately seems the way to go

think my vote would be S2000, especially if not a daily driver, something about that banshee howl as the vtec trips over guaranteed to make you smile

mind you they are a snug fit inside (and thats from my perspective rather than any slight on what I am sure if your fine form )

I have actually come close to buying a skip before, I was very into the Honda community at one point.

In the end, I got the 350Z because the deal on the table was a million times better - Honda were pulling my plonker.

To be honest, there are no shortage of S2000 options at all, strangely enough as I find them a relatively rare sight on the roads.

I could even pick up a post facelift (no suicide suspension) with less than 50k on the clock (around a 52/53) for about £10000 which is the kind of money I would want to pay if I was going to mess with it significantly.

I am thinking blue/red/yellow now too - might as well get a bit flash eh?

i agree 100% with xenon- go with the 993 cab. all in all, 993s have been known to hold their value better than the newer 996s. the number one reason is the demand for the last generation of air cooled flat-6s. before ordering my 335 M-sport i was searching for a 993 S coupe. unfortunatly for me the only ones i found in my price range were the cabs.
a close friend of the family (actually, my mothers boss) and porsche enthusiest explained to me that a manual coupe (what i was looking for) always fetch more money. there is less of a demand for the cabs so you could probably get one for less than you think.
also, many porsche followers feel the 993 is the best looking 911 to date. i agree.

I do like the 993, but its possible it might prove a little bit too old skool for me to be honest.

I am not the person that a car like that should be owned by, I dont get up every morning and clean my cars before work etc!

I dunno, I just get the feel its not for me!

I'll post a proper response later when I've got time. Obviously got comments on a 350Z, Massa & S2000.

Too upset to comment now

Dont be silly, its horses for courses and at the end of the day, you know you love your car!!

I have to admit, what I am looking for is the 'feel' of the 350z 150%.

Being actually chased and flagged down by cars full of women leaves you with a smile on your face which little else can replace - the sound was another thing, something private but equally exciting.

Combine the two and I am a happy chap ya know?

This was a concern of mine about the 996 Carrera - I dont know what they sound like, and although I am sure its good - I doubt its as exciting as the Maser!!

The S2000 wont turn heads or attract women in the same way, hence why the thread is all about Exotica... but the point that I can get a good one for about £10 - 12000 cant be ignored.

I really dont know now.

I think its a tough price point actually...

You know what - sod it, I will sell the BMW as well, and buy a bloody 370Z coupe haha!!

You want something exotic that will cheer you up and be different enough from the BM - the Maser FTW

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. Hope things sort themselves out for the better soon mate.

What about an SL55 or SLK new shape. Or a even a Jag XKR or with a bit of haggling an Aston Virage or for a bit less a BD7.

I would go for TVR of some kind or a an open top Talbot Samba !
