No, I had an inbuilt timer, no stat what so ever. I wired it to the wall adjacent to the boiler itself. The stat is a 240v ac supply (L, N & E) with 2 switch wires, which is basicaly a 240vac feed with a switched wire returning the 240vac to trigger the enable.

Personally, I dont rate the products as high as some do, yeah they are better than some of the cheaper ones but I wouldnt say thay are the Rolls Royce of products. I prefer the Siemens stuff (formally Landis & Gyr/Landis & Staefa products) as it just doesnt seem to go wrong.

Yeah, more or less. But you may have to wire in a supply also dependant if the stat you have just now is electro mechanical (has a power supply) or just mechanical. If you are able to take off the cover and get me a pic, i will be able to advise you mate.

Yeah thats a mechanical stat by the looks of it mate, basically 240v travels to the stat and switches back to the boiler which then enables, so no neutral in the circuit. You would be better buying a wireless unit, the reciever unit sits near the boiler so wiring/power wont be an issue and the stat (transmitter) can go anywhere.

I bought a Heatmeiser programable stat (not wireless) in 2008 to replace the basic dial based thing in the hall.
Removed the old one, put the new one in it's place and job done. The unit cost £50 and I have seen my gas bill drop by at least £50 per quarter since. The nice thing is that all these devices have frost protection built in and a holiday mode so that even though it will let the house temp fall to something that would be uncomfortable to live in, it won't let the house freeze. But looking at the savings that can be made with these things, it would probably be worth paying somebody to fit one as the payback time is so short. |

I might have to invest in one too in a month or two.. our three storey house gets much cooler downstairs and the thermostat is a bit vague.. would be good to have it change automatically during the day.

Well I felt my house shudder earlier and a huge cloud ball rising from Tims direction so perhaps a just some minor charred eyebrows . At least he'll save some heating bills as the flames will keep them toasty warm for a week or so...

How To.....
Ok, with the milder weather I risked fitting the stat first this morning.
It really is a easy job, with the hardest bit pulling out the painted in older unit! So, using a multimeter (set to 240v) check you have mains power coming through the Red and Black terminals: Now turn off the boiler and confirm the mains is indeed off on the red/black) I was still getting 4v (from the boiler timer?) . Ran out of black tape, so just used some masking to cover exposed wires. Then pull the old backplate out (pesky old paint!) The honeywell installation instructions are really simple and explain the next steps... screw the honeywell backplate in to the orignal mount: Wire up Live to A and Neutral to B. As Will mentioned, leave earth attached to the original plate. Clip on the front faceplat and the check the boiler fires up! First impressions are good, seems very easy to program (so I can turn down) and then adjust when in Auto mode (so wifey can turn up) Looking forward to see how the 'Optimisation' works where it learns how long is needed to reach the set temp (so if its colder outside, it will adapt and turn on boiler earlier or vice versa) Thanks for all the advice guys

I did exactly this (same unit as well) 2 years ago. We have our heating on 24/7 now with simple temperature variations throughout the day. 22 degrees when we're in, dropping to 18 when we're not. Gas bill has reduced probably 20-30%!
I love the fact that the unit works out how quickly it can ramp up the temperature so that if you say you want it to be 22 degrees at 7 am it IS that temperature and not working its way up there!

Success!
Just wired my Honeywell CMT927 in, easy to fit and wire. Configuration was easy, currently using the built-in default auto settings but will look at modifying this as/when I can sit down and go through it.
Looking fwd to seeing some savings.....esp after the recent cold spell when we used a hideous among of gas!

Installed it today, only took 10 minutes including programming.
Thanks Will for the help. Looks a lot better and saves me having to keep turning the stat down before bed. I think 19C is the right temperature in the evening but we will see. |
