Exclamation Shaving fenders?

Recently, I installed a set of VMR v701's on my e92 (19x9.5 +22 Rears) with a set of 265/30/19 hankooks on them. Despite running on stock suspension, my car rubs frequently when I'm going at speeds excess of 30 mph (sometimes less) over medium bumps or potholes on the road; and trust me, La Jolla has a TON of potholes and road construction that I cant avoid. The only way for me to not rub when I'm driving around is if I slow down to 25 mph, and I'd probably get a ticket that way.

Now the question comes down to, should I shave or roll my fenders? A few friends told me simply rolling them wouldn't be enough, while others tell me rolling will be just fine. I'm also curious as to what are the downsides (or pros/cons) of rolling and shaving the fenders? I know shaving is somewhat extreme since it's definitely irreversible. Is the inside of my fenders prone to rust or deterioration from the shaving?

I'm a total newb at this so any information would help.

I love the aggressive-ness of the wheels so getting smaller wheels isn't an option in my book!

Never heard of "shaving"... rolling fenders is pretty common..i would imagine shaving would require body work and re-spraying?..seems extreme to get wheels to fit.

your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. i'm running 19x9.5 275 et23 with a decently low drop in the rear (covers some of the tire), and a roll was enough to stop rubbing. you should have no problem on stock susp with 265 tires.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll just roll it and see how it goes. Is it possible to shave after rolling if it's not enough? I would consider running 10 or 10.5 in the future and wondering if the option is still there to shave

Just roll. 9.5 ET22 with 265 is an easy fit.

just roll them first.. if its not enough u can take it to an alignment shop and have them put some negative camber and still be within factory specs so it should tuck the tire in a little bit. if all fails you can always shave it... i shaved mine off

Yea...thats a REALLY easy fit...

I'm doing 18x12 with just a pull...and not even a crazy pull lol.

You can always camber it in a bit. If you don't want to roll your quarter panels I guess..

Besides all options mentioned above
You can still shave the wheels at a machine shop, is usually 20.00 per wheel

Do they physically make the wheels smaller? Is there any repercussions to this?

Thanks for the advice everyone

With a fender roll and some negative camber those could probably fit without rubbing. You add a good amount of clearance if the fender rolling is done well.

My friend works at a local shop e-motorsports techinques and told me to rather shave it instead of rolling because its around the same price range. And you can go way more aggressive. But i heard that although they use a heatgun for a pull, the paint will always crack unless you repaint it? I plan on going really aggressive in the near future as well..

He's talking about shaving the tires, not the wheels.

Shaving a tire is usually done to match the wear if you are only changing one tire, but it can also be used (although I'm not sure why) to make the entire tire slightly smaller.

I'm also not sure why anyone would want to screw up the andling of the "ultimate driving machine" purely for looks, but that's just me.

Oh, and rolling a fender is pretty much irreversible too. It'll take a bodyshop and some paint to fix it.

Actually, he's talking about shaving the mounting pad down to increase the offset - definitely not something I would recommend as it would weaken the structural integrity of the wheel.

Hi All,
Just got a new (to me) 2011 335i E90 and it came with 20" BMW Style 167 (M6) rims:

Front - 225/35/R20
Rear - 255/30/R20

The rears are hitting the fender over any tiny bump or even some turns at lower speeds (like taking a left at a stop light!). Do I need to roll the fender for these or shave them?

Second question: are these tire sizes correct? Obviously the seller didn't know what he was doing.

Third question: should I sell/trade these for some 18" or 19" lighter OEM rims?

TIA!
