Protuning Freaks E-tune Review - Jake is the man!!

I just wanted to share my experience with everybody. For my stubborn 2009 E90, it proved to be pretty challenging to iron out all the kinks in my tune. I'm just stage 1 with DCI running 93 Octane. The 4.01 Cobb OTS maps gave me more power but there were very noticeable timing pulls and boost oscillations. Acceleration was lumpy and there were hesitations and surges. Not BMW smooth at all.

I read a little about ATR and quickly realized it was way over my head. I might not be using the exact right terminology in the info below cause I'm not an expert but you'll all get the get the jist.

So it was time to contact the pro's at Protuning Freaks and I started working with Jake. Jake and I spoke on the phone twice and were emailing each other 1 or more times daily. He was great with staying in touch with me and quickly providing with almost daily map revisions.

My car proved very stubborn and Jake first tried the basics with playing with timing and load targets. By doing that, within a few days he got rid of the boost oscillations. He also found where the limit of how much boost and load my turbos were able to handle. So at this point we had more power no oscillations. Progress was being made.

The next step was the stubborn timing retardation and timing corrections. They were pretty bad and were very noticeable to me when driving and obviously showed up in the logs. We tried a bunch of different map revisions and were still struggling. Jake has contacts at Cobb and collaborated with Cobb and then we had a Eureka moment were some major revisions were done to the PID tables in a new map. Once this one done there were no more timing drops when doing full 3rd gear pulls! This was a great milestone and Jake never gave up and was very persistent.

I was still noticing some timing drops when doing hard down shifts on the highway where the boost and RPMS would rapidly shoot up. I sent these logs to Jake and bam, he made some more tweaks and got rid of those timing drops too. He even tweaked some things to help smooth things out under part throttle as well.

I guess everyone's car reacts differently to the OTS maps but if anyone out there has dirty Cobb logs and/or feels hesitations, oscillations, surges, etc. with the OTS map I'd highly recommend www.protuningfreaks.com. We all spent almost a grand for the Accessport so another $200 for the e-tune is a no-brainer.

I have gobs of power now and power delivery is just as silky smooth as it was in stock tune. I couldn't be happier. If anyone has any specific questions for me feel free to pm me or reply to this post.

+1 for Jake@PTF -- Completely transformed my car after we made the tunes & you basically described my experience. He's a great dude & tunes your car like it was his own -- Max Power w/o being Destructive

Anyone looking for a ProTune, I HIGHLY recommend contacting the guys at PTF

throw up a log OP. Actually a great way to test your tune is to "step" the throttle. In 3rd or 4th, due maybe 30%, 60%, then 100% throttle.

Yup we tuned for 93 octane. I'm PA - plenty of Shell stations around here. I wish there was E85 close by!

Not by home computer where the logs are stored now, but I'll see if I can get a log up later or tomorrow.

I might try "stepping" the throttle just out of curiosity. I went with linear throttle mapping.

On the last map revision I was literally beating on my car, trying to induce a timing drop and couldn't. I did multiple hard WOT down shifts in 3rd and 4th gear, in a row, going up hill, with charge air temps much higher than ambient, and probably a heat soaked stock inter cooler. She kept pulling and pulling like there was no tomorrow.

Where in PA -- The best E85 station I've used is on Vine Street in Philadelphia

Otherwise use this: http://alternative-fuel.findthedata.org/ Just select the options (Ethanol Fuel, Public Stations, etc). I'd recommend on waiting on using E85 until the spring because it's prob. Winter Formula E85 now (which means its ~70% Ethanol content)

PTF FTW,

Great team, didnt have the pleasure of working with Jake, but his partner Dzenno. Great gains with Ethanol blends with S1 COBB.

Highly recommends PTF!

I'm in Yardley in Bucks county so I'm only roughly 25 minutes north of the city. Its not that far, but I work in NJ so I'm usually heading north of where I live. I'd hate to have to make an hour round trip twice a week to get E85.

PTF FTW! Those guys are awesome indeed. My tune has been running strong and trouble free first on pump now with meth and I'm loving the car. Dzenno did mine locally here in Toronto.

It's better for the environment and when direct injected it goes boom.

Well I can promise you that the Shell Station in Philly has consistently been the best E85 I've used (it's also convenient to blend since the E85 pump is sandwiched between 2 regular gas pumps with 93).

Otherwise try to get a big jump or a couple 5 gallons tanks & just make the trip once every so many weeks. I honestly run my E85 tune when I'm in need of an adrenaline jump or messing around with people. Since I DD my car & E85 lowers the mileage, it makes the most sense (besides the fact that car was not designed to run on high Ethanol content) to run it on 93.

+1

Shell over here uses Propel Fuels for E85 Pump, appears to be decent quality and consistent, but I have no supporting data other than my data logs are consistent on the E50 MAP.

I hear ya. I'm tempted, trust me. I know there are big gains to be had by mixing E85 with 91 or 93 octane regular gas. Just don't want it to big a big hassle. But yea if i get 4 or 5 gas cans and of it and make a monthly run to the city that might work. And if I run out I can always just switch back to my current map. Gas mileage is desireable but i think we're all willing to pay to play.

FMIC is on the list and possibly down pipes but I literally just got the car 6 weeks ago and still have warranty. Got to see how cool the service manager is at the dealer first.

My car's FBO & I just extended my Maintenance Plan, but it's only cause my Local Dealer has a lot of cool guys that don't mind working on my car. I always uninstall the tune, but the minute they pop the hood or put the car on the lift that it's no longer stock.
