New laws allowing cars from Mainland to enter Hong Kong?

Hi,

Had an interesting chat with a taxi driver just now where he said people from the mainland are allowed to drive on HK roads... Did anyone hear about this? I didn't read it on SCMP in the recent days....
Does this mean we can drive to China? (would you want to?)

This is a special programme for a daily quota (around 50 per day initially, as I heard) for a "single entry" license driving cross the border. It is supposed to be applied to both mainland and HK (both ways).

1st stage applies to HK cars only, starting March. 2nd stage applies to mainland cars as well. There's no planned date for starting 2nd stage for now.

Just great! Allow more locusts...oops..."friendly neighbors" into HK! But this time behind the wheel in a private car.

I can see where this is going to lead to in the near future. First news headline being "Unsuspected pregnant mainland woman in private car crosses border without being detected to give birth. Driver gets paid thousands for transporting."

now we know why the government is increasing FRT for new cars....less cars in hk so that more cars from mainland can come!

No need for PRC plate to enter China, but the pass lasts for 7 days & single use only.

Exactly. It's retarded. Doesn't make any sense.

I couldn't imagine how this would ruin the SZ Bay border especially during weekends.

There is also the matter of the HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge. The same critics slamming the mainland drivers being allowed to drive into HK will slam the bridge for being a white elephant because no one will be able to use it (since they will pressure the gov to stop the scheme). Policy dilemma for you there.
