We removed lead from gasoline (petrol) due to it's health consequences - very clear link to lead poisoning. We want to get rid of the soot due to it's clear links to lung cancer (and developing links to other cancers, and other health problems due to it.) You guys aren't helping.

Further, if you read TDIWyse's threads, I think it's clear that the DPF (and really the SCR, too) aren't causing any major performance problems, given intelligent tuning changes: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=760638.

Besides, I like my clean tailpipes, and removing your DPF/SCR is going to cause you to have to clean them all the time.
I am with you. I can't stand being stuck behind old diesel and all the soot coming from the tailpipe.

I am fine with any ECU changes.

Until I relocated for a spell to Asia in 2006, I had a Jetta Diesel (1986-2006). I loved that 44.5 mpg average car. But it was smelly, noisy, and smoky. I was not popular in my neighborhood or to those behind me at intersections or hills. I spent a lot of time cleaning the soot off the back end of that car at regular intervals.

Clean air progress can be painful to the early adopters. And costly for the D owners. The rest of the world may be escaping the piper for now, but they will pay one way or another eventually.

It will catch up eventually everywhere. It is already in Europe and all manufactures have to comply with new law. All will take is few big fines to those who have removed theirs to make you think twice before you do it.

Here where I live, Diesels has to have DPF by law.
The car will not pass inspections every second year without it.
If you are stopped and called in for inspections, and it is discovered that the filter is removed, you will get a big fine. No doubt about it.
Despite that I have choosen to remove mine. At least for a while. I might put it on again....

Btw, Does any one know if it is possible to get a "high flow" DPF like you can get high flow catalytic converters for petrol cars?

I'm all for the DPF system to make our cars run cleaner (for the environment) but I just wish they placed the access to the urea tank in a more accessible area! Some of the diesel models from other car makers have it placed convinently right next to the gas tank.

Our is not as bad. VW Passat is inside the truck. My coworker had his trunk carpet replaced 3times under warranty because the dealership keeps spilling Urea all over inside the trunk.

However, the 320d has the fill plug where the gas tank is. I guess bmw listen this time.

Given how expensive the stock DPF is, a high flow one would be even more prohibitive. FWIW, the SCR cat is high flow, though.

My understanding is that this is the only reason to keep the SCR cat in place. It also helps keeping boost pressure more stable.

FYI, SCR cat costs about $2200.

If you stop and think about it, the 335d produces 20% less NOx emissions than a standard gas car. Think about all the cars with cats that still expel smoke/crap out their rear end under acceleration, whereas our cars do not. This is really no different.

So, after some work under the car today, I've determined that my SCR cat is clogged. Unbolted the DPF from the midpipe and let it run free, and all the power that was lost because of it seems to have returned. My issue before was there was no power at all, going up hills was a serious effort, and the car would continually go into limp. That no longer seems to be the case. Should be visiting a fab shop tomorrow to have the SCR cat removed and replaced with a straightpipe. As a side note, the car sounds beastly at the moment.

No limp mode so far, and as far as codes are concerned, there are 2 that don't have descriptions for themselves, so I'm unsure as to what they are.

maybe there's an OEM DPF and/or SCR from another vehicle/brand that could be made to work with our cars? It's technically not illegal if the system still functions properly.

What's the ID of the DPF or SCR pipe?

There are NOx sensors before and after the cat. I suspect without a reprogram to delete the DEF system, the DME will throw a code and/or the car will go into limp with a few more miles of driving in this fashion (w/o the cat). When I had my exhaust fabricated/installed I left the cat alone for the sole reason there was a sensor aft of the cat. In any event I am very ineterested to see/hear your results with the straight pipe.

Your issue got me to thinking if there were any dpf aftermarket options available so I did a quick search and came across this DPF from ASSO. I am not certain if it will work in a US spec car or if our DPF's are even the same - that would require further diligence. Out of curiousity I sent them an e-mail asking the question.

Too far for me, I'm afraid, although if they'd do it for free, I might make the trip.

SCR cat is being cored out now, and I'm removing the mufflers, as well.
