Water Pump Upgrade
I heard that BMW upgraded their electric water pumps that were originally installed in the 2006 model year. Does anyone know if this is a fact?
Do the E90s produced after 2006 have a history of early water pump failures? If I purchased a new water pump is there a way I can identify if the pump is indeed an upgraded pump? If I purchased a new water pump from one of the many online BMW parts suppliers, will the pump be an upgraded pump or is there a chance that I could get an older model pump that was left from their stock of original pumps? Are all water pumps sold by the online parts suppliers OEM or are there aftermarket manufacturers? Is there anyone who has had a second water pump failure? If so what was the mileage on the second water pump? |

Number 1 Rule of thumb if you're not a modder or a upgrader go with OEM
Call the dealer tell them your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) They will let you know whats going on ask them if you can come in and let them replace it for you. Most of the time this is hassles and free of charge |

I checked NA models and found these part numbers:
#11517546994 325i/330i 2004-2007; #11517563183 325i/330i 2004-2007; 328i 2006-2009 #11517586925 325i/330i 2004-2007; 328i 2006-2012 So, sounds like there's 3 water pump models. Not sure if it's due to failures and if they addressed the issue. |

saw this on esc tuning a wasserpumpe?
Don't settle for a new water pump for your N52; demand a "wasserpumpe" from Germany, by Pierburg. The N52 coolant pump is not belt-driven. Electrically operated, it allows faster engine warm ups and saves horsepower. Problem is, when it quits, your engine overheats--right now. Prevent overheating. If your N52 water pump is making warning sounds, head off trouble. Install a premium Pierburg "wasserpumpe" and avoid the inconvenience and substantial expense of an overheated engine.

Negative
the E46 Uses mechanical water pump. Our E90 water pump still uses the same part and there have been problems reported with 07, 08, 09 models

It appears that you can purchase an E90 replacement water pump using 3 different part numbers. If BMW has corrected their earlier designs, I wonder if some of the 07, 08 and 09 models might have had an older replacement pump installed? Maybe if BMW offered a re engineered pump they were not available until after 09? Or if BMW hasn't re engineered their water pump, the 2010 and later models don't have the mileage yet for a pump failure? In today's business world, I would suspect that older pump designs would stay on the shelf until they are sold out. Unless BMW took the old pumps back for credit, why would a supplier not try and sell their old inventory?

It looks like buyer beware, I think a lot of E90 owners might have bought and installed pumps with the first two part numbers if they had some of the earliest pump failures which might have occured before the upgraded pump was available. Also if you are not aware, some people might buy a remanufactured older model pump and will be just replacing their failed pump with one that has some of the original problems. |

Hey All. I had a waterpump and thermostat failure yesterday in my E92 2007 and my car only has 55,000 miles on it. Sounds like premature to me. $1,150 to fix it all. contacted BMW Canada and was basically told they didn't give a crap about my premature pump failure because my warranty is over. There was a service bulletin put out on the pump and thermostat but only to say when one breaks replace both. No recalls were done on these items. Looks like BMW is droping the ball on this one. I have also been told that now my valve cover gasket is leaking. I've replaced these myself before but never on a BMW am trying to decide weather I do it myself or not as it will cost me an other $460 to get it done. anyone know about these ?

Since they do re-mann these I think I will open my old unit up and play around with it...who knows...might make a nice spare.

Got a 2011 E93 335 coupe- am i in the clear?
Sounds like the water pump design was not changed so I guess we're all in for a potential issue |

It appears the water pump is now on it's third part number. I'm assuming that with the third model, the problem has been corrected. The question you need answered is when was the third model installed in the new vehicles? And as always with new designs, the proof that it has solved the problem is in actual usage. So the question should be has anyone experienced a water pump failure after having the third model installed? And if you have had a failure in the new model pump what was the cause of the failure?
