Auto Transmission Clunk when shifting from reverse to drive
Not sure if normal, but when I shift from reverse to drive there's a pretty hard thud, seems like it's coming from the rear. With my windows down and near a wall it sound rather metallic. Just one single thud. What's the most common reason?

When's the last time you have serviced the transmission....new filter pan, fluid, sleeve seals, double D seal, and shift solenoids? I would try that first.....if that doesn't fix it, you might need to pull the valve body and install one of those Zip Kits........the plungers in the valve body and stick or leak and cause hard shifting. Search online...lots of info out there on it.

Sounds like you just need to jack up the car, get under it, and start wiggling stuff and seeing where the slop is. Sometimes you just need to dive in and find the problem.

Mine does something similat when shifting from D to R, perhaps more of a thud on mine though. Local specialist told me it's likely the drive shaft centre bearing. It didn't seem terminal hence I have left it for now, so can't confirm, but certainly plausible.

If it was me....I would look into the actual U-JOINT at the center bearing area....see if it's got any slop it in. That's the part that takes the most abuse.
Also.... when's the last time you have checked/changed your diff fluid? Low/thin uid could be making the gear slop sound worse than it is. |
