Torque: is it ft-lbs or lb-ft?

I always thought torque was expressed as "pound-feet." But I see it described as "foot-pounds" all the time, here and elsewhere. The terms are used interchangeably. Which is correct? Does it matter?

Probably not, because everyone knows what you are talking about either way

Torque = force x distance

Force can be measured in pounds (lbs)
Distance can be measured in feet (ft)

In math we know that (a)(b) = (b)(a)

So torque can be ft-lbs or lbs-ft. Doesn't matter which unit comes first or last.

Thanks. Now I don't always have to wonder whether I'm saying it right.

As long as you know that the dash is a multiplication operator you'll be fine.
