Very few people travel in my car besides me, however my rule is absolutely no eating in the car and that goes for snacks like chocolate, candy and especially nuts. Even my wife knows not to eat in the car. As for drinks, I allow water, and coffee as long as the cup has a lid and isn't more than 75% filled to the top (ie: get a medium in a large cup).
For myself, I do sometimes eat in the car when I have no choice, however I only eat things that I are not messy or crumby, such as a mcdonalds cheeseburger (never a big mac or anything like that though) or pepparoni sticks.
