Sered, so how much would you say it'll cost to just open up the pass side of an E92 exhaust and remove 75% of its packing and then install it? I can't recall if you posted how much you paid, and I thought if you also opened up the driver's side just to peek inside or not (which I'd skip).

I paid $200, but it would have been a good bit less if they only needed to do the passenger-side.

If anyone wants a stock muffler to experiment on, I've got one in my garage.

I have a second muffler I am in the process of removing all padding from (passenger side only). The sound of my modified setup with straight pipes has gotten much higher, and I am getting a LOT of compliments from the local group. I think its cause of the new lagfix settings in the G5 board I'm running. Anyway, it sounds great on secondary delete only, but it is pretty loud, soooo....this second set will be for when I go completely kittyless again, since if I keep it I think I'll go deaf when I go that route.

Catless DPs increase the exhaust note considerably? I have a set in my living room awaiting install still

Yeah much louder if you remove all the perforated piping. Add kittyless pipes and you might not be able to handle the noise.

I have catless dps with stock exhaust. With the wastegate comp on the procede at 30% it sounds pretty damn good!

Thanks! Im at 50% wgposition right no, but it rattles at idle. You can eliminate rattle by moving it either up or down from 50%, right?

Also, as the wgposition gets smaller, the loudness goes up. What is the benefit of a higher wgposition? Tip-in boost?

Back OT: Im still waiting for a definitive catless solution that makes the car louder without crazy rasp. Any more updates to custom-made BMW PE-esque exhaust solutions?. I almost pulled the trigger on Vanguards but then i heard the rasp

I say the best setup for performance and sound would be:

-CL 3" DP's
-Secondary cats replaced with Vibrant bottle resonators
-Keep E90 resonator but replace all crush piping with mandrel piping around it
-75% packing removed from muffler, and weld on tips to delete the flapper.

That's what I would do

Edit: I don't believe WGs rattle at idle...must be something else...do you have downpipes that could be causing it?

Yes, the lower the % the less rattle. Throttle tip-in is supposedly slower but I've also heard shiv downplay this. I'm no expert here, so I'm not sure how much of an issue that really is.

How does the guy manage to weld the pipe all the way around in such a tiny spot? I can't see how he can weld the underneath of the new pipe?

I take it a bit of the new pipe not being welded all the way around just means more gas escapes thru the gap rather than out the exhaust, acting like a perforated portion of the pipe, so no big deal.

I didn't think you replaced any of your perforated pipes with solid though?

Why not just wrap the perforated part? It would produce the same effect and be cheaper.

Is this really that hard to do? My local shop wants 4 hours plus to open the muffler and remove some packing..... Am I the only one that thinks that is a joke?

Sounds like a joke to me too, seems like it can be done in less than 2 hours? It's just removing packing, not like you're asking to get solid pipes welded. You should probably call another shop.
