Great timing, I just got my AccessPort!
I plugged it in and checked for codes. I thought it wouldn't be able to connect since my car is Feb07 built, but it said I have no codes. As expected, it couldn't identify my ECU when I tried to install. Last edited by ren; 03-22-2011 at 11:41 PM.. |

Holy crap, I'm now as giddy as a school girl. Maybe it's time for me to order the AP and wait for the firmware upgrade to come out instead of the other way around....
@Rob: Need an '07 tester up in ~5300' elevation? @Alan: Any specials going on?!?

Yeah, they need some upgrade program...we give them our giac flash loader and get some discount.
Hard to justify dropping another $800-900 on a new flash that will perform the same. Just get some logging and DIY stuff. The thing I like is the ability for later upgrades and mapping improvement. GIAC has gone AWOL as usual after they put a product onto market, like it was perfect from the start...eye roll...

1. Ability to easily go back to stock anytime you would like. 2. Ability to custom tune based on your modifications, fuel, elevation, ect. 3. Handheld datalogging device. ^^^With #2 being the biggest reason. In most other communities that I've been involved with, most people don't tune their own car, but having their cars tuned by local professionals is VERY popular, and Cobb has a VERY large network of Protuners (a couple friends of mine who tune professionally are extremely eager to start tuning these buggers). If you're a bit of a car-geek like myself, I'm looking forward to being able to tune my own car, as based on past experiences, I find OTS maps to leave a bit to be desired. They typically "work" just fine, they're just typically not "optimal" (i.e. typically you can coax a little bit of extra power/consistency out of a car custom tuning vs an OTS map). For someone who merely wants their car to be faster/more consistent ect, having the ability to not rely on someone in another part of the country to create OTS maps for you is nice. Drive your car down to a local dyno/Protuner, and actually have them custom tune your car in your presence. Pick up a few more ponies typically and have a smoother, more consistent tune made specifically for your car, under your conditions. Considering you can't really re-sell a Giac flash (big advantage for first time AP buyers- resale value), it's probably hard to justify the extra costs involved I'm sure... but it's something to consider Just my $.02

GIAC is much more expensive in the long run, especially if you live in Europe but not only. It's really a pain in the ass especially without a dealer nearby. BUT it's also the best flash available, tested by multiple cars at the race track. So if you want the best right now, go with GIAC. If you want a good investment though, I would get Cobb. I find it a bit immature right now looking at the logs but since the maps and stages are free, and given their previous expertise I'm sure they will get everything right in the end. It has great potential, and all this because of the handheld flasher. I wish GIAC would come up with something like this.
