I was at my local dealer yesterday talking about another car and he let it slip that BMW will be releasing V8 diesels in the UK soon. He said the 5.0 litre twin turbo will be in the 5 and possibly 3 series! Also the 335i and d engines are likely to appear in the 1 series.

Regards

Chris

Unfortunately I don`t think we`ll ever see a 340d or 345d. I read somewhere that that they had problems fitting the 4.0d into RHD 5er and 7er and decided it would be uneconomical to re-engineer everything against the expected sales volume. I don`t think the added weight would be much of a benefit either.

The 135i has been rumoured for a while and as we already have a 130i, seems quite sensible.

Don`t know about a 135d there is rumoured to be a 125d coming with a 2.0 TT Diesel (200ish hp) at the end of the year.

mike that engine is one of the reasons that i cancelled the D3...apart from it being a manual, and overpriced, and loads of turbo lag and i drove a 335d

I had a deposit on a D3 last Sept but ended up with the 325d. I`m looking for a replacement now but am holding off `till the supposed new engines arrive at the end of the year. If the D3 gets the 2.0 TT with a bit more power over the standard BMW version and then a decent re-map it will be a very well sorted car but only if Sytner have enough common sense to introduce a Lux. package as an option.

I had a 320i as a courtesy car back in Feb and the difference in handling with the lighter engine compared to mine was increddible, it felt just like my other halfs 118d sport.

I was at BM dealer yesterday also. Had a lovely new limited edition 130i (new 2 door version).

He also said that the 1 series is rumoured to be getting 335i/d.

He also said he'd seen the 1 series coupe in a room with other BMW dealers where they had to drop their mobile phones into a bag on entering so no-one could take pics! It was in some crappy colour like pink or something and he wasn't too sure about the looks of it !

The 1 series is an odd looking car, I try so hard to like it but I dont think I do. When the E60 and the E90 came out I had similar doubts but the shape grew on me. A 1 series coupe eh? wonder what that looks like, anyone seen any 'spy' shots?

Thanks Oli,
Doesnt do it for me, it's trying to be a mini E92 but doesnt quite make it. It will be a niche car in my view. Suspect that the rear space will be limited which kind of makes it a BMW equivalent of the old Ford Puma or Vauxhall Tigra, cant think what the current market slot it goes in to.

Its quite clever thinking though.

Have you noticed with all car manuacturers, that all their small cars are now the size of their old medium cars etc etc, ie. Corsa - Astra -Vectra and so on. The 3 series is getting on for the size of the old 5 series. So the manufacuruers just introduce a new small car, to replace the old small car, and the growth continues. I mean the 1 series is the size of the original 3 series

It wouldn't have been any more difficult than fitting the V12s in the RHD seven series. It was just at the time diesels didn't have the popularirty in the UK they do now. With BMW now selling 1.5 diesels for every petrol that they sell it may well be worth it.

Our local dealer had a V8 4.0 e46 (petrol) that he was trying to sell us a while back. That was based on a 318 body as the four cylinder engine compartment was better suited to a V8 than the six cylinder variants.

Apparently the 5.0 diesel is all aluminium and hardly any heavier than the in line six, plus they are able to position it further backwards in the the engine bay.

Regards

Chris

Not long after I first got my e39 530dSE, it had to go in (small dink in the bootlid, dealer repaired and de-badged it FOC) - and they gave me a 525i Sport as a courtesy car... boy, could you tell the difference in weight. It was a lot sharper handling-wise.

But then again, you could see the fuel tank emptying as you used your right foot! The diesels are absolutely fantastic cars, and i have them for the mileage i do, but if money was no object, the lighter petrol versions every time!

(that is without having experience of driving the 335d/535d twin turbo beasts, and their tree-wrenching torque though).

Fortunately the difference in weight is becoming less as all the new diesels are aluminium. I personally prefer the sport versions handling to the SEs on 3 and 5 series, maybe this was a factor in your judgement of the courtesy car.

Regards

Chris

If they fit a 5.0 twin turbo diesel in an E60 it would be quicker than the M5 and more to the point I`ll show my arse in Woolies window.

BMW sell a 745d in mainland europe, but not the UK.

It's based on a 4.4 litre V8 engine with a single turbo.

http://bmwheaven.bmwsport.net/content/view/35/3/1/5/

Stick another turbo on that engine and you would get a 750d (just as a 330d becomes a 335d).

It has been said that the v8 diesel won't fit in the e60, but I don't buy that. BMW manage to fit a 5 litre v8 in the 550i and even squeeze a v10 into the M5 without to many issues.

The X5 is getting a pumped up version of the x35d engine with over 300 hp so this will prob. find its way into the E60 and E90.
