Ipod Touch - no sound from headphone jack

My daughter used her ipod touch on a running machine at a gym.

It was plugged in using the usb connector and produced audio output to a screen/speaker system. The running machine screen then became the touch screen controlling the ipod.

Now she has come to use it at home, there is no sound out of the headphone socket.

If speaker is selected, it can be heard from the built in speaker.
Plugging the headphones in shows the volume control moving to a different level, but no sound in the headphones.

Nothing was plugged into the headphone socket when on the treadmill machine.

Any ideas how to reset it, other than reset it?

If it is like an iPhone if you press the top and bottom buttons simultaneously for about 20 secs, it reboots it. OTOH it could be busted.

Does rebooting mean that all the songs are lost?

when you press the power and home button, keep them both pressed untill the screen goes off and you see the apple logo, thats when you release both buttons.

If that still doesn't work you can check your warranty status here...

Can you not restore it through iTunes?
It might just be a software problem.

I'm hoping its just a software problem because nothing was plugged into the headphone socket - so I don't see how it can have been damaged.

But I can't find anything that has control over the sound output selection, other than the built in speaker. (Which does work.)
