320D Clutch judder - clutch and flywheel replacement

I have booked my car in (320D) following noticable clutch judder and having had the software update, which didn't work.

The dealer has told me that as its under warranty I won't have to pay, unless the clutch/flywheel shows signs of overheating - which is very unlikely in a car of my mileage/age. They said once the gearbox is out, they will have to measure the flywheel and clutch and BMW will authorise/decline accordingly.

Has anyone had to stump out despite having judder?

I think they check to see how much play is in the flywheel. Mine was replaced, however my brand new 320d judders from the day I bought it. Only very slightly not quite as smooth as you would want it but i find it a distraction and still really pleased with it. From having driven 4 different 2litre bmw diesel engines it's something to expect when owning one. With my driving style at least.

My DMF was replaced recently following clutch judder. Its a massive problem with most diesel engines. MAnufacterers fit them to aid smooth gear selection.

The problem is that they are made up of springs and rubber seals, and as they are sealed units they arent servicable.

I got to see my damaged dmf once it had been removed, the recomended amount of play is appprox 10mm, mine was about 40mm.

Luckily it was replaced under warranty, an after market warranty at that.

one other thing is the clutch should be replaced at the same time. FAlse economy for it not to be. I argued this point, but after seeing my old clutch at even 45k it was starting to break up slightly.

E90 Clutch Judder

After 57,000 miles my 320d has developed serious judder, which i am being told is due to a broken fly wheel. Is this normal? Car out of warranty and being quoted £1700 to fix. Not good for a quality car surely.

From research thsi is not an uncommon problem, is that correct?

Have they stripped your gearbox down and inspected the parts? This is what they'd usually need to do to confirm its broken. If your car has always been maintained by BMW (servicing e.t.c.) then you can apply for a goodwill gesture (i.e. 100% parts and 50% labour paid by BMW UK). The dealer would have to do this.

What is the conditions under which the judder occurs. Is it in every gear, at what rpm, is the DMF warm or cold? Does it occur everytime or only when giving it full gas?

57k is not ridiculous for clutch to go.

But make sure it's not just the propshaft donut..

ps. A reputable Indy can supply and fit flywheel/ clutch for 900 tops

For me its in first gear when pulling off. If I pull off without touching the accelerator (which is possible in diesel) then on some occasions you can actually pull away without judder. However driving normally you will get it at every pull off (but more apparent on hill pull offs - where its more of a judder than a rumble).

Yes, this is perfectly normal on a 320d...!
I'm currently waiting for a replacement clutch from BMW to arrive at my dealer.
There is a new modified unit coming out, Rich1068 has one on his car. Mine is due at the end of February.
There is a topic which covers this, think it's call Clutch Judder ... a fix? on page 5

Well I had my car in for the clutch judder issue last week. The dealer stated that BMW would only authorise the software 'fix' first which was horrible, took them two days and when I got the car back it drove worse than before as the car over rev's to try and mask the problem when pulling away.

The good thing was when they handed it back they stated that it had failed their testing and they werent happy with it, so back it went on Wednesday and I got it back today. Apparrently they had to strip the clutch and actually send pictures to BMW before getting authorisation for a replacement.

The car now feels much better, no judder at all and I'm sure it's actually a different type of clutch as it feels lighter with a higher biting point that makes it less of a chore in stop start traffic.

I'd actually gotten a little attached to the 1 series loaner I had for 4 days, a 2012 model with just 29 miles on the clock. It was a 118d sport and actually felt quicker than my lci
320d! The new interiors are very nice too when well specced with leather etc like this one was.

Clutch replaced

I have just got my car back from Bavarian in Belfast having been in for a juddering clutch. A modified clutch has been fitted and seems to have cured the problem. The service was excellent and couldn't have been more helpful.

Engine Vibrations and Shakes

I have been reading this thread with interest as I am having a mysterious problem on my E91. I was driving last Sunday and after pulling off from a corner with DTC off to get a little drift , I felt a thump as if falling into a pothole and all of a sudden felt strange vibrations from the clutch as well as the gear lever started shaking. I opened the hood and the whole engine was shaking. My initial thought was that of a failed engine mount. So the next day I took it to a BMW specialist and immediately pointed at the Dual Mass Flywheel. However, he was surprised this was the cause as no noise was being heard and the car is relatively low on mileage, just over 50k. Normally he said, the DMF failure produces a sound which this does not have. The other culprits he said could be the balancers on the timing chain or better still, gearbox mounts. The car still drives well, albeit the occasional issues with 2nd and 3rd gears, hence him thinking it's the flywheel.

Has anyone had or known about a similar problem? The DMF and Clutch are quite expensive parts and I keep wishing it's something trivial as a mounting. The vibrations and shaking are barely felt on 4th and 5th gears and parctically non-existent on 6th. The plan is to start by opening the gearbox and take it from there.

Any help is much appreciated.

I highly doubt it is one of the mounts mate. I agree, it does sound like its the DMF/Clutch. The latest editions of both parts drastically improve, if not cure the problem. I'd suggest visiting your local dealer and seeing if they will replace both as a goodwill gesture. Its not normal for these parts to fail at that sort of mileage so they may contribute to 100% parts and 50% labour, leaving you with 50% of labour to pay. That said, I see you are in Malta - not sure what the dealers are like over there, in terms of willingness to help/generousity!
