Maybe (probably) I'm in the minority here but... I didn't buy my car to take junior to soccer practice. I didn't buy it to go buy groceries. I didn't buy it to cart grandma to church on Sundays.
I bought it because it's a fast, flashy, powerful, twin turbo sports coupe. Reliability isn't even on my radar when I buy cars. If I was going to keep it for 10 years I might start to worry about it, but I've already got my eye on my next car a month or two after I buy one so... |

Let's say 20-30% of all 335i from 07-10 have problems... I would say 10% drive the car very hard and another 10-20% don't maintain it properly... Everything that actually has to do with BMW has been addressed like the fuel pump and the turbos...

It looks like the article pulled the data from Consumer Reports. In the reliability charts CR groups the used 3-series into different categories; one for the lower and one for the higher engine from 2002-2011, so 325/328 and 330/335. The reliability issues they mention only pertain to the 335i since the article lists 2007-2010, but they apparently labeled the issue with the 330i because the chart covers that model too. If they did a little more research they would have just labeled it the 335i.

Clearly it was a slow day for new car press releases so some hack was asked to whip up a space filler article.., Ironically, if you follow the link to 'research the 3 series', the reliability rating is 5 greens for 2006/7 and 4 greens for the 2008, the last year for which they have data. Hardly matches with the article does it?
The term 'reliability' is not a quantative term in this article, but there is also no definition of the meaning and no source for the basis of the opinion. So it's pretty worthless. It would be fascinating if manufacturers actually released warranty and other statistics that would allow an objective reliability evaluation - but I guess there's zero chance of such closely guarded secrets ever coming out. And, of course, the attitude of the manufacturer in the face of failures is important. In that respect, BMW does seem to have stepped up done the right thing with the 335i issues. |

Well look at it this way. BMW only used the n54 for a couple years then changed it to the n55. They don't seem to have much confidence in the engine either.

My E90 330I never had a single mechanical problem at all during my 2 years of ownership. Bought in 2007, drove from 20k-61k miles. Only dealership work was-bad passenger seat airbag sensor, replaced sticking door handles and replaced a cracked 162 style rear rim. 0$ paid out of pocket. Wish I still owned it......that N52 has basically been around since E36's and shouldn't even be compared to a 335I.
Not sure any new cars will last over 200k now, too many electronics to fail.

If the N54 was so bad, then it wouldn't have won award after award for best engine design, engine of the year, etc., etc. The sheer number of these cars on the road and the premium price they're still fetching for low mileage examples tells you that concerns about unreliability are overblown.

People, people, people, don't be like Paul Ryan and think you can use stats any way you want. They have to be reliable and valid.
My car was out-of-service for 3 weeks. That in itself can make the overall car "VERY UNRELIABLE," and "AVOID." Because my Nissan is nearing 15 y.o. and it never even was out-of-service. Flash forward to today--the 335i has never failed ever since, so that's nearly 2 years. This means the overall record is unreliable, but the last 18 mos. have been 100% reliable. If you were buying my car used from me, you'd be getting it while it's been 100% reliable. It would be like a baseball player striking out every game for 3 weeks. He will never be able to get his batting avg. back to normal. But what if it was because he couldn't see the ball, but got lasik and has been batting 1000 ever since? Knowing what I know now, some of those sub 20k 07 335 coupes might really be gems. |

Meh. That's a list for people for whom overall reliability is the ONLY valid metric; people who want to drive appliances.

You don't know fear until you've owned an E60 M5 out of warranty.

The n54 doesn't scare me at all (knock on wood). I own one out of warranty and plan to keep it for awhile. I'll maintain it... The things that sort of scare me on the car are all the electronics (adaptive headlights, etc.)... The engine isn't a concern at all hpfp is covered to 120k. Even off warranty, what's it cost at an Indy shop? A $1000? That's really not that bad.... Turbos cost around $2500 to replace these days, which would be crummy, but they don't seem to truly fail often, just rattle.... Small prices to pay for how fun the 335 is... The electronics are shared with the 328 so we're all in the same boat on those.
I think the average person expects to do to maintenance to their car which may work on a Honda/Toyota... Not so much a BMW (or any other European car for that matter). It's all a matter of what are ones expectations of the car...

Shows how much the mutts at MSN know - who pays attention to what they say anyway? Personal experience is always the best indicator. I've owned three 3-series (1 new, 2 CPO) and my wife has had one CPO 3-series and now owns a bought-new 1-series. Never had any "reliability" issues with any of them. Apparently I bought mine from "enthusiasts" who knew how to treat their cars and from a dealership who knew how to treat their customers.

Are people on this site still trying to defend the reliability issues with these cars? Amazing. I thought we had all just accepted it as fact and loved the cars none the less (albeit with crossed fingers).... Looks like they've addressed the HPFP issue (failures seem to be way down), but the HPFP is not, and has never been, anywhere near the only common issue with these cars....
Not sure warranty coverage is a factor in determining reliability itself. It's a factor in considering how much of a burden a potential reliability issue will be for the customer. Last edited by ragingclue; 10-12-2012 at 03:46 PM.. |

I agree with the 335; not so much about the 330. Anyways I think its a typo.
I would only own a 335 under warranty and with a second car. So that being said; I wouldnt consider owning a 335. Getting twice the power half of the time makes me prefer having half of the power all the time.

I owned two 335 with N54 and no major problems, no HPFP issues, nothing. My brother drives a 535 fitted with N55 and no problems so far. We are not pampering our cars, these cars are used day and night (MD) in heat, rain, snow and on some very bad roads here in MA. And "we" are not the an exception, for conformity check this http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=613143. Last edited by RMG; 10-12-2012 at 05:23 PM.. |
