Switching between fuel octane levels & engine adaptation

I've been cheap for the last year and have been running the car on 87 octane. I'm thinking now that maybe I should run it on 89/91 Octane instead. I've read a few threads on the benefits/disadvantages of that, so no need to re-hash that debate here.

My question is -- if I switch to higher octane fuel now, will the ECU automatically adapt and advance the ignition timing? Or do I need to reset the ECU somehow?

Thanks.

Is there really that big a price difference between 87 and 91? And the ecu should re adapt after a few tanks to re advance the timing for the higher octane, but then again im not software brain.

It will re-adapt itself to the higher octane. If you want it to adapt faster, you can clear out the octane adaptation values with a bt tool or coding cable.

I have a coding cable, how do I reset the adaptations? Can it be done with NCSExpert?

Also, will the Ignition ON (engine off), floor gas pedal for 30 secs sequence clear octane adaptations? Or only 6AT shift points? Those would be irrelevant for me as I drive a E91 328i 6MT.

Thanks.

You would use INPA to clear adaptaions or DIS or there's BMW Logger. BMW Logger and INPA will only do O2 sensor, throttle, VANOS, VVT etc. anything related to the DME. You can do octane adaptations in INPA as well. If I am incorrect please let me know. The gas pedal to the floor trick is to reset throttle adaptations. Sometimes if you clear all adaptations at one time you will get the half yellow engine. If you do, then you perform the gas pedal trick. As far as transmission adaptations, thats in the EGS module, which my INPA does not allow me to do. I have heard DIS will let you do this, but I have never tried it.
