335i Sport mode

I assume "Sport" Mode will reduce mpg. Does anyone know by how much?
Any figures that someone could share?

if it matters, I drive a '09 335i DCT and I am talking about selecting Sport mode via the button below the gear-shift.

It won't be a straight forward answer, it will depend on 1,000,000s of varients.
I doubt anyone has ever tested enough to give any meaningful data? BMW did'nt.

It's a pretty meaningless question when you think about it.
Its like asking, "how much will my MPG drop if I drive with 30% more throttle and shift up at the red line?"

Who knows? Go and find out and let everyone else know, then you can comment on how unhelpful everyone is....

Once you are up to speed not at all. Sport will increase revs before changing gear. There is no definite amount. If you are racing between every set of lights then with or without sport you are going to burn a lot of fuel

You miserable buggers, Christ! The replies in this thread smack of the kind of superiority complex I never thought I'd see on this forum.

Sport mode on the DCT doesn't rev any more or less. What it does is changes gear more aggressively and blips the throttle slightly on an on-throttle down change. I've never seen an effect on MPG when using it. I do believe that (especially with heavy mods) it will lead to quicker gearbox/clutch pack wear, so I don't use it around town etc.

If you WERE on about D/S mode, then as someone else said, you would find the car revs higher and holds a lower gear when it could easily change up 2-3 or even 4 gears and cruise comfortably. If that's what you're asking about, then yes, you will see a decrease in MPG.

What you really should be thinking about with DCT is - how often can I use launch control!!

In reply to the OP,

not sure by how much the mpg will go up by...

but town driving/ sporty driving, the OBC is showing 16mpg on my one.

Well, without knowing his driving style etc what were you expecting. If he drives and lets it auto shift, if he is a 70 mph driver anything we could of commented would of been irrelevant.

Best way in the circumstance would be to run it in drive and reset fuel economy, then run in sport and do the same thing. Im quite sure he didnt need us to really tell him that!

To reiterate a point that both the OP and I made, he's talking about the Sport button (unique to the DCT box) and NOT the D or DS placement of the gearstick.

Point I'm trying to make is - his driving style is largely irrelevant. Even if he was talking about D/DS then be honest - couldnt you guys have at least TRIED a friendly and constructive answer which perhaps asked for more info in support of some basic comments?

The fact that everyone who has commented has either misunderstood or just not read the OP's first post suggests to me that this is a burn the newbie style witch hunt.

This bloke has 27 posts here and will probably not be back after this. Don't you think that's a shame? We were all new once and most of us have asked a dumbass question.

I partly agree, that does not take away from the fact that he has the tools to answer it at his disposal, hence my original reply, drive it and go see.

The tool he CHOSE to use was this forum.

wow...didnt expect so much for what seemed a simple question.
for the naysayers, I "am" and have been driving on Sport for a few days to see what happens - after resetting the counters. I am trying to drive in the same manner I would in Normal mode i.e. put my foot down the same amount at the same times. and I find that Sport mode is much more responsive, even jumpy at times. I was just wondering if anyone else had done the same experiment.
and I am not "worried" about the mpg - I didnt say that and someone jumped to a conclusion. I am merely "curious". I trust I am allowed to be curious after buying a 335i?

If you are generally in a lower gear using sport mode (which you are) than you will use a little more fuel. I would have thought that the effect would be neglegible however, maybe 1 or 2 mpg, as the lower gear means that the engine is more responsive and therefore you will spend (slightly) less time accelerating, and (slightly) more time at your cruising speed.

I've driven BMWs for years

and the funny thing I've found is that super economical driving doesn't necessarily translate into super economy.My wife drives like a feather and I'll often see the average mpg improve when I drive a little more spiritedly. Probably because I arrive everywhere 10 minutes sooner
