E92 Bumper Damage

After about a year on this forum, I never hoped that I'd have to make a post like this but today is the day...

I parked my E92 328i in a nice spot that was far away from most other cars like I always do to avoid dings and other accidental nicks and scratches. Unfortunately when I returned to the vehicle about two hours later, I noticed that there was something on the rear bumper. As I got closer, I noticed that there was damage from what appeared to be another car backing into mine. The bumper is torn and scuffed and the stress marks from when the bumper was hit are clearly visible on the top portion near the trunk lid.

I have filed a claim with my insurance company as a hit and run and I can go ahead and take it to my preferred BMW dealership however I wanted to get an opinion from everyone here before I go.

Will the bumper need to be replaced? If so, would this be a good opportunity to shell out some extra $$$ and get an M-Sport bumper? Also, what are your experiences with hit and runs?

Any input regarding this entire ordeal would be great. I am just glad that this was a small accident and that no one was hurt! Things could always be worse.

You'll need a new bumper for sure. Someone backed into my front bumper a week after I got my last BMW. The damage was far less than what you received, but there was still a hole in the bumper. Definitely go M-Sport...

Does anyone happen to have the part number(s) for an E92 M-Sport 328i rear bumper? I looked around not just on the forum but on some other sites too and I couldn't seem to find much info.

you should just have an estimate sent to the insurance and get a check directly from them instead of having them pay the body shop themselves.

You can get an m-sport bumper online and then pocket the rest!

yea get msport if you got insurance involved. Tell body shop to order it, and they will!

Hello everyone. Even though this happened about two weeks ago, I finally had a chance to take it to the BMW collision center today.

This is the first time I've ever been in a situation like this... With previous cars, I would just drop the car off and let the body shop/insurance take care of everything. With that being said, please pardon my questions if they sound dumb. Lol

Anyway... An estimate was done and I was informed that there MIGHT be damage behind the bumper. They mentioned something about a body panel/support beam?
The representative said that they would have to take the bumper off and see if there was any damage that was not visible.

Since I want to upgrade to an M-Sport bumper, I was planning on just ordering the bumper from Tischer, having it painted locally, and doing the installation myself. It doesn't seem that hard (according to the DIY I came across) and considering the fact that I have to pay a deductible since the damage was a hit and run, I will end up saving some money this way.

How do I go about handling this? Would my plan work? Could I improve my plan/do something differently? I just want to make sure I can do things my way and not have the collision center dictate how I get this done.
