BMW Speed Limit information technology coming soon to Australia

BMW of Australia has announced a new speed limit detection and warning system which will use BMW sat nav data and compare your current speed with the posted speed limits in your area and then send out a warning to you if you've mistakenly gone above said limits.

How does ths system know what the speed limits are exactly? Well using cameras mounted on the side mirrors of course Once the camera picks up the speed limit from a road sign, the information is displayed for the driver and also sent to the OBC to compare to your current speed.

Quote:
This technology is a first for the Australian market, and typifies the approach BMW takes in respect to development of cutting-edge technology solutions. The ultimate driving machine must offer unrivalled performance capabilities, as well as the most advanced safety systems available in the world today.”
-- Starvros Yallouridis, Managing Director of BMW Australia

This Speed Limit information system will debut on the BMW 760Li, 750Li and 740i models as standard equipment. This system will also be available on other 7 Series and 5 Series cars as an optional extra for $700. For everyone else, you will have to continue to rely on your nagging significant other...

And that's why I'll never drive any of those models that come as standard equipment.

I'm sure you can turn it off, just like the option on several portable nav units.

The feature sounds a lil annoying, but the technology is definitely pretty cool. Should just put their efforts into a cop locater and tell you when the fuzz is coming up.

This is the first step in my prophetic idea....

5 years ago I theorized as safety standards get more stringent there will be in place a system to overide the vehicles speed to set it to that of the current road via GPS. Sensors either on ground or from satelites will tell your ECU what the speed limit is for the road you are traveling and restrict travel faster that that limit.

All this is theory, and it would drastically negate a whole lot of gov income due to speeding tickets, but it is still valid as a posibility.

One step closer to automated cars driving point A to B without human involvment. Its comming.

I think this would be sweet. Especially if you could taylor it, say I want to know when I go 10 over, or 20% over the limit.

Or if it just politely displayed the speed limit next to "your speed" that would be a nice reminder

its either make it standard or go home. No one is going to pay 700 just so their car can tell them the bloody speed limit. whats wrong with these guys?

I'd say everybody who hasn't used the system yet keeps it down a bit.
I experiencee the Speed Limit Info in both the F07 535i GT as well as the F10 523i and it helps a lot.
Especially in Germany, where you have Highways with no speed limit, or often also with 130, 120 or 100 km/h it's really helpful and avoids you driving 200+ km/h in a 130 section.
It's also helpful in cities you don't know yet.

So what are you complaining about? The acutal "warning" of the system? There is no visual flashing or a alarming sound or whatever.
You just see the current limit in the HUD (which can be deactivated) or in the speedometer (which can be changed to whatever you want via the BC button).

In a nutshell the system in combination with a head up display and the "German Autobahn" really helped a lot. And there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the sign of "all speed limits end here" in the HUD in front of you as you go 250 km/h
