Check Engine Soon Light

I'm hoping you guys can guide me. I stopped at the gas station to fill up my car. As soon as I drove away the CES light came on. As soon as I got home I checked the gas cap and it was fine. I restarted my car and the CES light stayed on. Car appears to be running fine. It's an 08 328i with 46,000 mile. It's still covered under the CPO warranty

My question is should I take it to the dealer or to an independent mechanic?

Most likely your gas cap. Make sure its closed tight. You may have to drive a couple of days before the SES light goes away. Keep us posted.

Get the code from autozone.

I had the same issue and went to autozone and was told it was my gas cap. It took a couple of days but it finally went off, and I haven't had any issues since. I just took my car in for an inspection 2 and everything checked out great!

Thanks for the advice. I'll wait a few days to see if the light goes out.

I remember seeing a BMW USA video on the CES light and it said to wait 24-48 hours for the light to turn off and if not, then you probably have an actually problem. Anyone know why it takes so damn long for the light to turn off? I mean.. a little tiny magnetic sensor or something could easily turn the light on then immediately off once closed..

You are dealing with the emissions system of the vehicle. Most all OBDII codes, which is what triggers the service engine soon light (SES), are determined by the car's on-board diagnostics system built into the ECU (Engine control unit) computer. The OBD II system does self-checks on the monitored functions of the car and when it finds a fault it makes note of it. If the fault reoccurs it will trigger the SES. Depending on the system being monitored, like in this case the gas tank pressure, once the problem has been corrected, the OBD II cycles the self-test several times before it will determine the fault is corrected. It's called a "drive cycle". It takes a few drive cycles to determine if the tank is not leaking pressure in the case of an open gas cap.

Read this thread http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260065

If the light doesn't go away its most likely that stupid pump. Mine was covered under warranty, but I have heard that others weren't.

It's been about 4 days and the light is still on. I've driven less than 100 miles during that time so I'm not sure if I have to give it a bit longer. In any case, I'm planning on taking it to Autozone to see if they can pull the codes. I have the CPO warranty so hopefully it will be something covered.

Update: Seems it's a gas filler valve that went bad and is covered under warranty. I'll know more once they complete the repair and I get the service report.

Yikes! Does that mean I may be in store for future issues?

Not saying that exactly, but a car like yours with only 46k miles is not known for these kind of issues thats all.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. It’s been a good car thus far so hopefully it will continue to be a good car.

Yeap great cars ideed. Just make sure you do as much as preventive maintenance as possible. Much cheaper option than paying for repairs.

This happened to me and I headed straight over to the dealer. Ended up having an ignition coil failure and only had to pay a $50 deductible.
You can ask them to check it out and diagnose the problem, and ask for the cost for repairs are before you have them work on it.

A little late, hope you already solved the issue!
