That is to long even for BMW oil changes. Does the car know the condition of the oil or something?

He's doing it because it wants to, not because the car is telling him to. All "M" BMW's get a 1200 miles service, so this individual feels it is the right thing to do for his non-M car.

As far as I know, all new BMWs get there oil changed at 12K miles - 1 year. What ever comes first.

My car tells me 15000 and some date in 2011. I purchased the car in late August and have just reached 1500. Since the break-in is complete, I'm changing the oil. Others may disagree that its needed so soon but its my preference.
When BMW says free service for the first 4 years or so, the longer intervals certainly save the company money. I'd hazard to say that the longer intervals will fill their pockets in the form of more maintenance visits when the coverage is gone. Working my intervals into BMW's intervals gives me peace of mind, especially since I'm looking to hold the car beyond the warranty period.
