Holiday Inspiration for my 40th
Hi all
Need to pick the collective brains of those of you that are well educated and well travelled. Need a memorable location in December 2011 for me and the wife for my 40th, good weather, top hotel in a special place, none of this shopping in New York Business. Up to £5k budget (spends extra) and dont want to fly much more than 6 hours though. Seems to be some decent sales on at the moment so could do with booking before end of the month, Cheers in advance PJS |

Well, I have been around most of the World But prefer some places to others.
Monaco Ive never been but seems to be the bowlacks, if not there are some lovely places in Italy. Lake Garda, Lake Como etc. Really depends what TYPE of holiday you want, ADVENTURE, relaxing, SUN + SEA OR SKIING... Many many different alternatives.

We went to komandoo in the maldieves for our honeymoon last year. If I could afford to go back again we would be there in a hearbeat. Treated like royalty. We only spent a week there as we were at kuredu for the first week but managed to get a free upgrade and moved. No comparison in the too.
Kenya would also be high on my list and for your budget you could really push the boat out. Maybe a hot air baloon safari now that would not be something you would forget. |

South Africa.
Cape Town to Durban along the Garden Route then Safari in Kruger Park, then off to Sun City for some gambling.

Was gonna say Bangkok then saw your wife was going
+1 on Cape Town although that is a 12 hour flight (same time zone though). Stay at Cape Grace with view of Table Mountain. Then Safari at port Elizibeth (drive wine or fly) and you can stay 5* at Shamwari game reserve.

Look at Club Med. Sure enough bahama's etc is all english spoken, but even at other Club Med places english is ok. The adult only clubs are a bit wild in the evenings
We've used them for years. Quality holidays, no drunk idiots despite the all in formula, we both dive, and use all the sport facilities (sailing / water skiing etc) |

Sofitel Metropole, Hanoi. One of the world's great hotels. Make sure you stay in the old original wing. About US$400/night. Worth it.
Sofitel Dalat Palace. Also in Vietnam. Just as good in a hill station. Less well known, about US$250/night. Morocco is quite spectacular, say Marrakesh. Was backpacking when I was there so can't recommend any decent hotels. Syria is also pretty good, say Aleppo (on budget again, can't recommend hotels). Shanghai. Excellent 5 star hotels aplenty. The biggest city in the fastest growing economy in the world and modern architecture which looks like it was designed by The Jetsons on acid. Beijing. Quieter than Shanghai, more like the political/arts centre of China vs Shanghai as the business centre. Flight time is a problem though for all my options except Morocco and Syria, it will take you at least 10 hours to get there. Just my favourites |

We went to Rome for my wife's 40th and stayed at the Regis Grand, lovely hotel and great sites to see/places to visit.
We've been invited to a friends 40th at Richard Bransons "The Lodge" at Verbier this May, although from what I remember it's a little pricey.... http://www.thelodge.virgin.com/ |
