Arrow Huge HPFP inventory. The End of the N54/N55 HPFP Fuel Pump Saga?

Reported on E90POST Homepage

I had some issues with starting my car the other day and it was dieing left and right. I knew I needed a fuel pump and figured I would get the 933 pump, which is the latest one.

When I picked up my car, I was told that I got the newest pump available. It's pump # 13517616446.
I went to European Auto Source after the pump was installed and they looked up the part number to see what the deal was with this new part number.
There were some questions that we had, Why this new part number?
What's different with this one?

Then we noticed a huge number.
We saw that there is an inventory of over 27,000 fuel pumps with part #13517616446 in the United States.
That's HUGE!
If you looked at the previous part numbers of fuel pumps, you would find that at most, there would be 1000. At most.

Now, why the huge number?
Do you guys think that this pump is the fix and BMW is getting ready to fix everybody's N54/N55 to this pump?
Or
Do you think that BMW is just getting ready for everybody's pump to fail and these are just back ups?

I'm wondering and hoping that it's a fix because why would BMW send so many of a specific part number if it's going to add to the problem.

Discussion?

Thats a significant number of units. BMW has invested so much in parts, time, storage for such a vast number, I am guessing they are very confident with this new pump. This might be the fix we are waiting for.

BMW is has historically been a very top end engineering company. It should only be a matter of time before they "engineer" a way out of this fuel pump fiasco

Hope this is the end of all this HPFP nonsense!

That's exactly it. The recall is finally hitting, my car is at the dealer now for the update. I'll report back when I get the car at the end of the day.

I had two different N54s, both with 881 pumps... never had a problem.

But why does the TSB state that its OK for dealers to use the 933 pump IF its in stock? I'm hoping that the combination of injectors, software update and this newer 446 pump fixes the issue for good.

The odd thing in my case is that only the injectors and software update are affected. I'm still on the original 881 HDP. I'm curious as to what the new ISTA/P 2.40.2 update fixes. Maybe its entirely related to how the injectors spray fuel.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Both parts numbers (P/N 13 51 7 613 933 and P/N 13 51 7 616 446) incorporate the same level of HDP quality improvements. If necessary, in order to expedite the repair time, you may use the P/N 13 51 7 613 933 from your center’s parts stock supply instead of ordering P/N 13 51 7 616 446 from PDC.

My car is due for maintenance next month for a brake flush. Should I take the leap of faith and accept the recall?

I think it's because the 933 pumps are rebuilds where as the 446 pumps are brand new. The thing that sucks though is that I've heard that there have already been 933 pump failures.

doesn't seem to be failing as often, but i suppose that can be due to the mileage on them.

pump failures on the 933 could just be due to bad quality control since they're rebuilds?

My understanding was that 933 is a rebuild of 943, not of this new 446. Still, I'm confident in the 933 that I have. I only read about one 933 failure but that was not clear, and I cannot find the thread. And since the 943/933 there are far less HPFP threads on the forum.

My SA wanted me to schedule a recall last week but I put him off. Is it better to get the recall now or wait until the current pump starts to fail? If the current one (my 2nd) is working fine, what would be the advantage of replacing it right now?

Umm, there is a voluntary recall for the HPFP. There were threads about it and the letters are being mailed out. Actually, I saw a thread here about 1-2 months ago with 466 hpfp in the work order of a user here.

I called BMWNA yesterday to make sure that they have my correct address so that I can get my recall letters for fuel injectors and the hpfp.

A very knowledgeable user here posted that all you need to do is bring your car to the dealer and ask them to give you recall information for it. The system should automatically show the recall info to them.

As a side note, I am on my second HPFP and it is the older 881 part number. So far I've got 12K on it and it works fine. First one failed at 7.5K

You can also call or e-mail your SA and refer them to the TSB. Just give them the last 7 digits of your VIN and they should be able to let you know if you're affected or not.

I'm surprised that my pump isn't affected but then again, its still the original one on 45K+ miles.

I think this will be a fix. BMW is to stingy to just stock up on them all now.
