Replacing clutch but not flywheel at 94k miles
I am about to replace my clutch in my 335i. The car has 94k miles and I have only felt the clutch slip twice at high rpm on 4th gear highway pull.
I do not want to spend the $500 on a new flywheel if it unnecessary so I plan to only replace the clutch. I am looking for advice, is this a good idea, and have people replaced a 335i clutch but not flywheel. Thanks

Unfortunately nobody is able to tell you the condition of your current flywheel from here.
You can wait to pull it apart and inspect or roll the dice. After nearly 100K miles on a stock DMFW, it's usually pretty worn out internally, at that point we'd have to recommend it be replaced. As the above poster mentioned, you can do it once and do it right or potentially have do do the labor twice a lot sooner then later. |

Jr, if you plan on keeping the car, do change it out right the first time. Get the necessary screws, change the fluid, get the CDV among other things... If you don't change the dmfw out and end up having to do it the labor alone (even your time is money) will exceed doing it right the first time.

My advice is to get a SMFW and 550i clutch, both together for less than 1k and you're good for a long time...

Don’t get a Single Mass Flywheel.
However, I concur with the majority of the advice here - replaced it with a LUK dual mass flywheel. I just replaced clutch (550i/335is) and flywheel (DMFW) in the garage. Was contemplating not ordering the flywheel but I’m glad I did. It’s not a job you want to do often and if you don’t do it yourself it’s not something you want to pay for in labor often. Do it once. |
