Oil Leaking From Oil Filter

I Had The Oil Changed A Lil Over A Month Ago And Have Been Riding My Bike To Work So The Car Has Been Sitting For Like A Month, Well Today I Used It To Go To The Gym And When I Got Back I Smelled Somthing Burning, Well I Opened The Hood And Noticed That Oil Is Leaking From The Oil Filter Cap Area. Does Anyone Know What It Means????

It Means That Either The Oil Cap Was Not Screwed On Properly, Or The Oil Filter Housing Gasket Is Leaking. Is It Leaking From The Oil Cap Or the Body Of The Oil Filter Housing Where It Meets The Cylinderhead?

from the cap.... i am past my warranty so i will have to do everything my self.

If it's leaking from the cap, I'll bet a dollar that the oil filter cap O-ring was put on improperly.
OP, if you unscrew the oil filter cap, you'll find an O-ring around the cap. The O-ring sits in a groove about .5mm from the cap lip. If the person changing the oil pushed the O-ring past the groove all the way to flush with the cap lip, that is likely your problem.

No; that's not what you'd see with too much oil.

Pick up an oil filter, they come with the o ring for the cap, I bet during the last change they pinched the caps o ring when they replaced the filter.

Use a strap wrench and DIY:

That's another possibility. I have one of my old O-rings that I saved, just in case I damage a new on while putting it on.

OP, the O-ring is black; sort of like a rubber band except that it's less 'stretchable'. I've attached a picture of the oil filter cap with the O-ring on it. The top arrow points to the O-ring in question.

Edit: This isn't an E-90 cap because the E-90 only has one small O-ring at the bottom. But the photo should give you a great idea of what we're talking about. Note that the O-ring is not flush with the cap lip; it sits in a groove ~.5mm below the lip.

got it never mind about the crush washer, almost done and will let you know if that was the problem.....thanks guys.......

ok here we go,
1) polled the cap off (easy to unscrew after i loosened it)
2) the filter stayed in didn't come off with the cap
3) after getting everything on the ground i noticed that the washer was flat.........
Looked at the one that came with the filter and it was round...(problem).....

ok so i replaced everything and as i was screwing it back in i noticed that it was a lot harder to screw in because the O-ring is catching. well i started the car and let it run and yup no leaks...

THANK YOU GUYS...I AM PAST MY WARRANTY SO I WIL GET GETTING ON HERE IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE WRONG WITH IT.....THANK YOU I APPRECIATE HOW HELPFUL EVERYONE IS..........

Excellent; glad to hear that it was an easy fix. Cost you less than $15.

... the crush washer is for the drain bolt, in case you didn't figure it out. Since you didn't drain the oil, you don't need the crush washer.

Wait, so when you look off the oil filter cap you found a flatened crush washer in it? Like iflyjetzzz said the aluminum crush washer is to replace the one on the drain bolt; it does not go in the oil filter housing. What did you do with the crush washer that came with the new oil filter?

no my fault the O-ring was flat.....not the washer..my fault..... i didnt use the crush washer because the oil was just changed so i didnt need to take the drain bolt off, and yes it was a very easy fix, i think cleaning all the oil in the engine and the drive way was the hardest part. so thank you everyone for your help. if i have more problems i will ask again.....
