Spacers, how do i work out which ones?

Hi guys, I'm running some BBS CHs on my 320D and the rears could do with some spacers

How do i work out which ones I need, the size I mean.

I want to mock up variois sizes to see which one i like the look of, do i buy crappy alu dpacers from ebay to get the right mm then bus hubcentrics?

Or could i use washers? Am not planning on driving it on them, just want to push the wheel out to see what they look like?!?!

Any help appreciated

;p

Telling us the offset of the wheels would be a good start

What width are your back wheels? What is the offset? What width tyres?

Rears are ET40 265/30/19 on 9.5 wide alloys.

Thats the propper size tyre for a 9.5 wide alloy. Fitting a 5mm spacer will bring the 40mm offset down to an ideal et35. The outside edge will extend an extra 10mm over oem
If you want to go for a more aggressive look, fit a 10mm spacer to bring the offset down to et30. Shouldnt cause any rubbing issues on the e90.

Surely if you put a 5mm spacer in it will make 5mm of a difference and not 10mm?

I guess you mean 10mm wider track rather that each wheel sitting 10mm closer to the arch?

No the wheel will be sitting 10mm closer to the arch (et35) than the oem 9" alloy (et39)

The aftermarket et40 alloy is just 5mm closer to arch than the oem alloy, so by fitting a 5mm spacer will bring this wheel an extra 5mm closer to wheel arch.

I guess we are both right

5mm doesn't seem like it would push them out enough, is a 5mm what most people run with this setup?

I was thinking at least a 12mm on each side :s

The following images are of my previous car with rears of 19" x 9.5" (ET36); 265/30 x 19 tyres and a 12mm spacer . For the same effect (approximately), you would need a 15mm spacer with your ET40 offset. The spacers were Eibach hub centric with extended bolts.

Hope this helps

12mm spacers will bring you down to a very aggressive offset of et28. Almost the same as M3 et27. Will look very mean, but may rub your wheel arches? Certanly would on the e92/93 models, but you my be OK with the e90 saloon.

I would describe it as "tastefully aggressive" on my E90. I had no rubbing issues at all with the Alpina suspension, fully loaded with four adults and their camping gear.

Anyone know what this does to the handling of the car?

As an average driver, I don't think the spacers are an improvement nor a detriment to the handling. However, I'm sure that a much better driver than me might be able to detect some difference to the handling due to the increased track width.

One thing that I can add is that in my experience, using 5mm spacers gave significant vibration at higher speeds (even when only fitted to the rears) as the OEM hub centering lip is barely deep enough to accommodate the spacer and centre the wheel (including the bevel) at the same time. This is a shame as a 5mm spacer is a decent, subtle modification.

My motivation for fitting spacers is for purely aesthetic reasons.
