High engine idle

Anyone have ideas on why my n54 would idle around 900 rpms? Seems high to me. I'm getting a clunk noise when I let off the brakes from a stop and step on them again.

Used to have that problem. Seems the DME raises the idle after experiencing mild misfires, so check your plugs + coils + injectors. I replaced my injectors and the idle dropped way back down to ~700 rpm. I never got any misfire codes at any point.

No idea why the clunk is occurring, probably unrelated.

Interesting find.

This is happening to me as well... I changed my plugs 2 yrs ago but never my coils nor injectors. Planning to replace my coils soon since i am still on the originals at 135k miles, also will pour some techron injector cleaner see what happens.

Check motor mounts, sway bar end links and power steering pump bolts.

Sounds exactly like what would happen to my car when one of my injectors took a crap. it would idle at 900 rpms, and coming to a stop, it would sort of buck/clunk a little bit. i pulled all my injectors to find #6 was toasted black and nasty. Replaced all 6 with index 12 injectors (i had index 6 or 7 at the time, and theyd been in there for 4 years ever since i go the injector recall done) and all was normal again.

my issue was a simple tune issue with MHD; uninstalled and reinstalled the tune and set the idle at appropriate rpm and everything was good to go.

letting go of the brake and experiencing a "clunk" could also be control arm related. ive driven an e46 320i before that the owner was desperately trying to rid of for a ridiculous price because the control arms were about to crap out on him.

It was the aftermarket tension strut bushings I installed....I had the strongflex red bushings and they were garbage and had to be replaced.
