Audi tries to steal BMW's thunder

Audi A1 to Debut in Tokyo

Less than two weeks ago we disclosed Audi's upcoming premium super mini, the Audi A1 and now thanks to Auto, Motor und Sport we can report that the Audi A1 will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October as a hybrid model. Earlier reports suggested that Audi would release the A1 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The A1 prices are expected to start at below 20,000 euros ($27,000) and annual sales targets are set at 80,000 - 100,000 units. Michael Dick, responsible for Technical Development at Audi, insisted that the A1 will be "manlier and sportier" than BMW's MINI, adding that "When a father sits gladly in his daughter's car, then we've got it spot on."

P.S. Boy that picture looks familiar....

Some competition! Unless it has a I6 twin turbo that has comparable hp I don't really care because BMW is more fun to drive than an Audi any day. I am willing to bet it's going to be FWD first and then AWD. Neither is what I want right now but for folks in the snow belt this can be a better choice.

"When a father sits gladly in his daughter's car, then we've got it spot on."

So it's a chick car, but that's okay because:

The A1 will be "manlier and sportier" than BMW's MINI

Nice marketing double-speak, while also taking a swipe at BMW and the MINI!

What a bunch of BS. :bs:

Realistically, could be a neat car but surely Audi will make it too nose-heavy and drastically prone to understeer like all non-RS models, while giving it industry-worst steering. I want to like Audis sometimes but they are mixed bag of neat interior design with poor execution. Plus, this car tries so hard to be a me-too sort of car that I cant help but think it wont have anything really original about it, other than being a small Audi which already failed with the A2.

I don't see a problem. Competition will force (hopefully) BMW to toe the line on pricing, and then everyone wins.

It would be good to see someone have the balls to bring a premium hatch to the US.

Just another Golf!

Audis are over-rated, over-priced VW's.

BMW's are BMW's... Nothing more, nothing less!

Audi's have great interiors, but as mentioned above, they tune them heavily towards understeer and stability on non-RS models. Disappointing. I think they look nice, and I really like the 2.0T in a 2-wheels-driven chassis; but with Audi quattro they really have to pump it up more as it's a bit boring in those chassis.

And since Audi doesn't do RWD...

A1 < 1er

If there is no awd, its not worth it; also you need a bigger engine in the a1 to make up for the awd; therefore 1er > A1.

New marketing slogan for the a1 "Its That Important"
