not sure if anyone answered the question of how to reset the factory milage for service. i changed the oil in my car and tryed to figure out how to reset the service remind for weeks! it has something to do with holding in the trip button on the odometer and you go from there. i think it opens some kind of hidden factory setting menu that you can reset all kinds of things including your service reminders. i know for a fact that there are more than one threads about this and i would suggest reading as many as you can find because i did get some different instrustions before getting it to work how i wanted. If anyone does attempt to go in and change some settings please let me know how it works out. I managed to reset my service reminders but aside from that everything was in german and VERY confusing. Also... i think if there was a place to be able to turn off the "no seatbelt" chime it would be here...

Thumbs down HELP FORUM!!

Great explanation by both by the way. i just wish i would of seen it earlier. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

my problem.... i own a 2006 330i and i was replacing the oil on the car which is simple but became very difficult. I noticed it came with a rubber ring and a copper ring for the oil filter. I replaced all the parts on the oil filter but the problem im having is i didnt find the copper ring anywhere so i figured it would go inside on the oil cap shaft. My problem now is that the car swallowed the coppper ring. HELP!! how do i get it out? its killing my car. i cant drive it down the road without it jumping in the rpms, skipping gears, jumping to redline, losing pressure power. i have offically messed up my car and i believe its the coppper ring loose somewhere in my oil line. any suggestions??

WOW. Do not even start your car.

I'd say, drain the oil. Remove the filter and look for the crush washer. Remove the oil filter assembly and look for the washer. If you have access to a good borescope, use that to search the engine internally through all openings. It is possible it is just preventing proper flow not much farther from where you put it in.....how that even make sense that that goes in there is beyond me...but whatever. Anyway, if it's just plugging the flow up, it may still be in one piece and you may be able to fish it out.

Then again, pay someone else to do it. Just do not start the motor.

Awesome write up. Just did my first DIY oil change on my E92 335i.

I am still not due for the first oil change for another 8,000 kms but this is the second oil change I have done. The first was done at the dealer at 10,000kms (had to pay for it) and just did one myself last night. I am now at 18,500kms

Very easy, slightly messy, but very satifsying doing it myself. Well, a buddy of mine assisted.

Thanks for the write up and everyones comments

I think it is a good idea to change the oil early in the cars life. No matter how often you change the oil, the car will continue breaking in for at least the first 7000 miles (10,000km). Changing the oil means there will be a lower proportion of metal particles in the oil during the break in process. Often people use the figure of 1,000 or 1,500 miles (or about 2000km) for the first oil change. Thats what I did with my car. Incidently, BMW stipulate an oil change at 2000km for the M3.

Smile Thanks to OP and the rest of the people that contributed.

My 2011 N55 335i finally reached 1,500 miles and originally planned on changing the break-in oil. This is my 1st BMW and didn't know how to perform the oil change on this car. This DIY from OP and the thread of discussions helped me out a lot. There's been a debate on whether to put 6.5 quarts or the full 7 quarts of oil. I used Castrol 0W-30 that I bought from Autozone. I put in 6.5 to test and see where the oil level would show up and it's confirmed to show at FULL level. I didn't want to overfill as this is not good for the engine.

Also, I tried putting a line mark for the oil filter but when I tried to install a new one in, I couldn't line it back up with the marker so I just ignored it and finished tightening it. By the way, these damn Rhino ramps are a pain in the ass! It would slip out and shoot forward everytime I try to get the tires up there. I finally had to get two people to block the ramp and that worked.

I bought two oil filters from BMW of Murrieta. As shown on the picture below, the oil plug had the original aluminum washer while the kit comes with a copper version. Here are some of the pictures I took with my phone during the oil change. Thanks everyone!

Nice additional pics wil. Awesome dyi thread. I did my first oil change today.

O-RING REMOVAL TRICK for both the small and big one
Don't just try and pull of the rubber bands like a condom - unless you have a threaded penis, it will be hard to do. (No pun intended). Instead give one end of the ring slack by compressing/stretching the other end, then loop off. For the small one, I had to do the same thing, but used a small flat head and inserted it into the extra slack and was careful not to rub against the threads.

Picture shown is not the e90 one, but image has at least the two I spoke about.

Other Info:
Used Rhino ramps rated 12000 lbs. And used a 2x4 with carboard boxes to create a larger ramp (smaller incline than 17 degrees or else your front mud flap will push the ramps).
I have a 330xi. Used mobil 1 0w40.
I initially put in 6 quarts and after like 5 miles of driving, the oil meter read "Minimum, +1 qts."

There was some oil in the filter can, but I didn't try to remove it. Did anyone try to remove that old oil? I'm changing my oil every 7k. The oil was dirty BLACK at 7k miles.

Thanks to everyone for commenting and making this a great DIY. I just finished performing my 1st oil change on this car and it all seemed to go smooth. I just need to check for leaks.

I want to add that the filter oil cap was extremely tight and hot. I had to use a cap wrench to loosen it. The green mark on the cap was beyond the mark on the metal housing so I guess the last guy that worked on the car really put some force to close it. No-harm I just matched the way it was.

Thanks again to all.
