Which is Quicker?
Which is Quickest?
330i (272bhp) or current 330d (not mapped) My guess is - 330i from a standing start, then the 330d quickly catches up and overtakes with its midrange torque & turbo coming into play, then the 330i ultimately closes the gap and eventually overtakes with its higher top speed....(i think) Just a bit of fun so please no dramas Last edited by Cyprio; 05-25-2012 at 02:57 AM.. |

Should be the petrol car I suppose as it has a better power to weight ratio?
Bet it would be too close to call though - if you've seen that vid I posted up earlier you'd see what I mean

Mapped 330d would easilly win due to the torque.

I am guessing in true flat-out long acceleration performance the 330i by a gnats whisker because that is all about horsepower, weight, drag, and revs.
On the road, the 330d is going to feel quicker, most of the time, to most people. You have to work a bit at making a NA petrol car go quickly (well, one with an engine smaller than a washing machine anyway) which for me is part of the fun - and when you do get it into an interesting rev range the reward is a long, long powerband of ever increasing performance and no delay at all when you change up. I'd love a 335 but the worry for me would be losing my license, given the mileage I do, as torque makes the performance very accessible. The power figures they quote for the 335 look like a joke when you compare how quick it feels compared to a 330. |

However, in gear times and the boot is on the other foot, the 330d would leave it for dead. |

0-62mph on both cars is 6.1 seconds
The petrol has 27BHP more. The diesel has 147ft lb of torque more which is available from 1750 RPM - 3000RPM The petrol's torque is at peak from 2750-3000RPM The diesel is 55Kg heavier. |

Yeah, same top speed.
If you had to drive from London to Scotland the 330d would defo win though!

Considering both cars are stock. I guess torque of D gives you impression that it is fast but in reality and on road it is not always true.

Torque is important but nowhere near as important as diesel drivers would suggest.
Ever notice that some of the fastest production and even more so race cars don't actually have much torque? What about cars like Honda Type R which have sod all torque yet still go quicker in a straight line than diesel or turbocharged cars of simular power? Every engine has it's own characteristics and to assume one would be quicker purely down to torque is often going to be wrong. |

Going on my experience, torque makes for a quicker road car than out & out bhp, diesel or petrol. I hated my old type R for this reason alone, kept it for 4 months before going to a big derv and never looking back.

Aerodynamics come into it a lot at that stage and hot hatchbacks are not aerodynamic. Torque gives you a sensation of changing speed quicker than you really are. Type Rs are the opposite where lack of torque removes the sensation. Last edited by Kerr; 05-22-2012 at 01:47 PM.. |

I would say between the two it is tight.
the 330d 0-100mph is 14.5 secs, whats the 330i? Can't be much quicker. If the 330i is anything like my M3 then they ain't quick unless your smashing the granny out of it. But the M3 revs to 8k (E46), does the 330i rev that high? is it a similar delivery? The Big D's have FAR more accessible performance on the road.

I would say it would be tight too, although I think the lesser powered 330d would be the dark horse.
I feel the 330d would be more fun to drive and easier to go quicker in. Sounds like you have to rag the nuts off the 330i if you want performance. All down to personal preference on how you like your power delivery. For me, I like to press to loud pedal in any gear - and go. Of course for anyone choosing between the two then other things come into it - engine noise, fuel economy etc...... |
