Question No power for cigarette lighter?

My cigaretter lighter has no power, is it the fuse? If so which fuse is it? I pull out the fuse box but couldn't understand the symbol. Thanks alot for all your help!

The symbol is a round circle with a line going into it and a dot at the end of the line inside the circle. The same symbol as on DC plugs to laptops etc.

This post has the picture with the numbers 87,88 next to it.

http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...ost360024.html

It's for an E60, but should be the same symbol.

Did you check for power with key on?....seems many cars only power up outlet with car running..not like the Ol daze when all the cig lighters were powered all the time...to be ready to light up that smoke you had to have while parked in some secluded spot with "company"!

Yea sounds like the fuse..i had the same problem after i got back from my trip to georgia..it was the fuse..the problem is bmw put to small of a fuse in there n it does go out quite a bit if you use it often..but don't stick a bigger one in bc that can cause more problems..it's just something you have to deal with..but yea.

Question What if it is not the fuse

All:

What if it is not the fuse?
I have used this post in the past to replace the fuse for the cigarette lighter.

However, this time around my cigarette lighter is still "not working" after I replaced the fuse.

#8 fuse (20amps yellow)

It also did not look "blown", I replaced it anyways just in case.

No go!

Any ideas?

Other information:
When I start up the car, normally I get the default "red" bmw colour around the cigarette lighter, however it does not seem to be on now.

I had the same problem in my 08 335 before I traded it in. Had the dealer check the fuse, wasn't the fuse so they looked in detail. They said I overloaded to circuit and messed up the socket holder and it needed replaced. They said it was something that is very weird that happens with theses BMWs. I smelled BS but whatever it was $50 and I need it fixed.

Thanks for the info N55.
I may actually have to consider that...

I use the socket for my GPS (has traffic updates) for daily driving!

Anyone else have any clue?

Order a new socket. It's an easy fix, or I may have an old one available to sell. (PM me) I switched out the ash tray/lighter for the sunglass holder tray when I got my 07 e92 last summer.

I had the same problem with my 07 335xi sedan and the dealership fixed it no charge - not sure if it was a fuse.

Just went through this. Ended up being the fuse, which is kind of a bear to replace if you have large hands and forearms (like myself) because the engineers in all their infinite wisdom buried the fuse box behind the glove box against the firewall so you have no room to work. I'm usually in awe of German engineering (Wow! they thought of THAT??!) but sometimes I'm left scratching my head...back O/T.. if I remember correctly I think (and I could be mistaken) I had to completely start the car to check that the outlet was getting power.

Oh, for clarification..was responding to OP...duaux: on mine I had the red light around the socket but no power. wasn't until i replaced the fuse that power was restored.

MissMyE30:
So "red ring light" around the socket doesn't necessarily mean there is power.
That is good information! But I am a bit more confused now.

All:

Can anyone else chime in?
- I have no power to the cigarette lighter
- The "red ring light" does not come on
- I have replaced the correct fuse
- I completely start the car up when testing

What other components are suspect?
Please refer to the diagram from link above.
If you can note the part# that would be great.

Thanks.

Any other accessories out? Perhaps it's the relay that turns accessories like this on when the car is turned on.

N55: that's BS they said you "overloaded the socket holder". Unless they meant you physically bent it up or something, if it was overloaded the fuse would've blown. I accidently put a defective plug into mine and totally shorted it out, and all that happened was a blown fuse.

Short of physical distortion or broken wires, there's really nothing that can happen to a socket electrically.

When mine died, they asked me if I had split coffee. I answered - 'I would not dare with the flimsy contraptions that BMW calls cupholders". It was replaced.

Well they changed the fuse for sure, They brought the fuse over and chaged it out and tried. Then they came to the conclusion that the socket was burned up or something. Oh well, lol i'm glad I dont have that car anymore.

carve: no other accessories are out... (i haven't tried AC, it is winter here)

update: my "red ring light" does come on when I turn on the headlights. therefore, I don't think the "red ring light" has anything to do with the cigarette lighter providing power or not. confirmed as stated by MissMyE30.

Exclamation Update

<== BIGGEST MORON on the forum.

Turns out, it was my GPS power plug that is the culprit!

Sorry to mislead anyone else reading this thread.
The instructions to replace the fuse were still GOLD though.

I guess I should have got the clue when I replaced the fuses that did not appear to look blown.

Thank you to all who chimed in.

Cheers!
