You're right, but... in the interests of a lively discussion
What's going to be the difference in braking distance between my Kumho tyres with a soft, grippy compound and your Pirelli Eco tyres with hard rubber?

I dont think there would be a conclusive test available as Steves car will have a smaller crossection tyre and will no doubt have less mass to stop due to car being lighter....... Unless of course he weighs half a ton

I smile when we get into tyre discussions.
We have the US and Canada with warranted 'tire' mileage, from 40,000 up to 80,000 miles (even 100,000). Common use of All Season tyres which are typically a compromised tyre anyway. Not sure tyre performance really has much to do with driving it would appear. Then over here, at the other extreme, we change from the OEM run-flat and we read words of doom, even from the motoring press. We will 'possibly' have an extra couple of metres stopping distance and kill ourselves and others. I totally agree the contact patch is our link to the road, and safety, often not considered enough. But there is such a wide spectrum of use, I do wonder how much focus there really is on grip levels and braking distances from the average user, driving speeds up to about 70 - 80mph. I often scan cars for what tyres are fitted (when crossing car parks), and I'm surprised how many decent cars, even high performance models, run tyres with names I've never heard of, let alone know what sort of performance they have. For many, I get the feeling if it is black and round, has 'legal' tread, it is good enough. HighlandPete |

How do you explain all the pairs of trousers with excessive wear around the knee area to the wife? Or do you have the trousers tailor made with knee pads in them? |

Me too... or three? Amazing the number of high end cars that are only a few years old, running on LingLong or Wanli or other such high performance brand tyres!
