335 Data Logging

I searched a bit but didn't see anything jumping out at me. Is there anything out there that can be used to data log the 335 ecu without having a piggy back? (I saw that there is logging software for the Procede) I'm coming from the subaru world where we had things like ecuexplorer (opensource) where all you needed was the ODBII to serial cable and you could log away. I'm planning on picking up dinan's tune once they figure out how to lay it down on the new ecu. I'd like to see/log the differences between stock and dinan.

Nice, thanks. The n54 ecu uses CAN?

I believe it does, I ended up with the USB CAN version.

Cool, How do you like the product? Does it give you knock sensor activity?

The Davis CarChip Pro works as well, if you're looking for an economical way to log a few variables for later upload and analysis on a PC. That Auterra DashDyno SPD looks pretty awesome, though.

Correct protocol for Auterra DynoScan is CAN 6 x (BMW 335i).

Get auteoengenuity, in a while they will have BMW proprietary support as an upgrade (they already have it for earlier engines) so you have that option (which is nice).

Thanks for the responses

I noticed that none of these tools show knock sensor or knock correction activity. So how do you know when the engine/ecu is not happy? ie how do you know when the ecu is pulling timing from knock or any noise the knock sensor is picking up?.

you know knock sensors are microphones so they output a voltage. Relative to what the engine is doing you gate the knock to determine the cylinder and push/pull timing.

The ecu learns in zones whats going on and slowly pushes and pulls (attack/decay) timing since engine conditions change constantly.

ie stuck in traffic, heatsoaked, opens up you nail it, things are rough. then you are doing 100mph and engine cooled down and you get on it, well it works with that data.

Knock is a closed loop voltage base system, its so complex that humans really cannot understand anything but perhaps "per cylinder timing pull" at the given moment. our heads would explode if we watched the actual knock sensor voltage per cylinder since the car detonates all the time (i'm talking boosted cars). you'd go crazy seeing all the activitity

You're right that almost nobody would benefit from being able to see the raw signal from the knock sensor. However, it would be very valuable to see the effective knock count as interpreted by the ECU in real-time. By 'effective,' I mean after all of the filtering has taken place that takes into account drivetrain noise and other variables that are not included in the calculation for timing/boost/fuel values. To my knowledge, no logger can do this as of today.

thats because nobody will get a guy with a real bmw logger and reverse engineer it by recording the datastream. heck while your there log the dinan programmer and then figure out the protocol.

thats how vag-com was invented for audi/vw/etc..

how hard do you want to work and how much money do you want to make
