How much for oil change on E92?
So i took my 2010 328xi to midas yesterday and the guy gave me an estimate of $170 just for a oil change. The service light on my car came on a few weeks ago but instead of getting a diagnostic that would cost me $110 i went to get the oil change because the car has only 40,000 miles so it's like new so i figured it would only NEED an oil change. Who can help? How much should i be paying for an oil change?

Oil change kit is $70-$90, includes filter , gaskets and oil.
To do it right you should buy oil filter removal tool which is around $15 and the large socket that allow a wrench on it is around $5. Unless you drive your car up on a few small blocks of wood first you'll need a low profile jack which is $150 minimum. You'll also need wheel chocks and jack stands which could add another $50-$75. Changing the oil yourself isn't hard but as you can see it requires a slight investment upfront. I have seen guys say they got the dealership to do the change for less than $100 but I personally wouldn't want even the dealership touching my car over something as common as an oil change. |

I used to pay $69.95 (all throughout the interval aka < 7.5k while under free maintenance), then it dropped down to $57.95. Now, unfortunately, it seems to be up to $79.95. I figure we're talking about $22 higher, not good, but at $80 it still is not worth it to me to DIY, since I can get a loaner for that $80, and I have two other cars with which to DIY in our household.
$170 is getting swindled and pimped. How could a dealer ask that much, and actually have customers who would pay it? |

I would not use Midas for anything, after some bad experiences with them. If your car is out of warranty/free maintenance (might still be in - mileage/years), you've gotten good advice above to find an indy. Also check www.bimrs.org and www.bimmershops.com. |

what about the other two quarts? online is over $60 shipped for BMW LL01 plus filter, which is why I paid $57.95, and still pay the $79.95 with loaner. If it gets jacked some more, though, I will start DIY.

$50 in oil and $15 OEM filter (maybe it's 12) = $65 for a DIY oil change with the best possible oil I can think of. Gives me a hell of a lot of piece of mind and I change it every 7K. Even if you are not a DIY person.. you should at least change our own oil. |

I honestly would never take my car to a place like midas, jiffy lube or any of those places. I doubt they'd even have the right filter or know to replace the the O-rings, and some of the oil may not be LL01 approved..who knows. Invest in a low profile jack. I got a nice 3 ton one from harbor freight and 4 jack stands for a nice price. Get 7 quarts of oil from Walmart since it is reasonably priced and you can the bigger jugs of it. I get the napa gold filters and they come with new orings and crush washer. Drive it around the block a couple times throw it on jack stands and do the oil change yourself. And besides it's always nice to have jack stands and a jack laying around the house incase your car or the family car needs something done

Yeah, I assumed it was junk when the first one failed, so I took it back and they gave me another, no hassle. That one they gave me is 4 1/2 yrs. old now. I actually have another that I picked up as a spare in the box. You can spend over $1k on a floor jack from Snap On. It's still made in China and only as good as the warranty.

People use jacks? I just use rhino ramps to get clearance and done. $40 bucks for ramps (cheaper on craigslist), 7 bucks for filter kit Mann-Filter on amazon etc. and 0w40 from Walmart $25 for 5 qt, 1 qt 7ish each depending on location. Plus some beers!
So total aside from the ramps and beers. It comes out to be 45 bucks give or take depending on location and price for 7qt total oil and filter kit.

My dealer does oil changes for $80-$90, check the specials on your dealer's website.
I used to do them myself, but for that price why get dirty and deal with old oil? |

I just buy two jugs every 3 oil changes... That's still less than $50 for an oil change...

Anyway the BMW dealer here in town only charges 79 dollars for an oil change. If you feel comfortable doing it yourself and have the proper tools you can save even more $$. |

I wouldn't ever go to Midas for anything
I wouldn't ever go to Midas for anything since there
outlet down on the corner was closed down for corruption. A dealer was charging a littler over 100 bucks around here for an oil change. I wouldn't let any non BMW shop do an oil change in an E90 because of the Oil Sensor (the way it reads) and O Rings that have to be replaced in the Oil Filter Housing. If you buy the materials from some place like Tischer and do it yourself and oil change will cost you around 70 bucks minus the tools. Based on what others have said and what I have observed I would put 7 quarts in. There are many dealerships that gouge on this service mainly concentrated around large metro areas. According to the manual you are suppose to be changing the oil once a year regardless of milage and you are entitled to one free oil change a year regardless of mileage till 4 years or 50k.
