Aftermarket stereo upgrade..?

Has anyone retrofitted the better stereo or fitted an aftermarket upgrade. Current prof and std speaker system is a bit pants compared to my old Audi.

Putting an aftermarket sound system in an E92 is not the task of your average ICE audio shop. Intricate set up is involved as the doorspeakers are very small and there are woofers under the front seats. Getting the correct amount of front end bass that can blend in with a sub in the boot requires careful acoustic tuning. What idea do you have in yours?

I'm still researching the best to start building the front end and I'm still looking for equipment that can

1) Sound good
2) Fit into factory housing slots as I don't want to cut into metal bodywork
3) Matches the rest of the equipment I'm using.

Hi Nick
Not sure what clearance stuff we have left to be honest but I am sure we can sort something out!

Would like to see your car in the flesh - want some new wheels and whilst I can't stretch to BBS LMs it would be nice to see them up close!

Cheers

C

Peppernick,

When you removed your standard fit head unit, what functions have you lost?

You've laready mentioned needing a seperate speaker for the PDC, but is there anything else you loose? I'm sure I've read somewhere that the external temperature and trip computer functions are run through the head unit also - is this correct?

What (if anything) have you lost by removing the standard fit stuff?

The external temp and trip function are not lost. You'll loose the function of the bluetooth button but with an aftermarket HU, I supposed you'll be going for an aftermarket bluetooth kit as well, so all is not lost (BMW BT is pretty bad anyway). The other function you'll lose is the ability to switch HU source with the dedicated BMW steering wheel mounted button.

TBH, the only buttons you'll need are the volume adjust and track selection, and the Soundlinx adapters will restore these.

You can but I doubt you'll be improving sound quality. Interference is the main problem as you do not have dedicated outputs from the stock HU and your amp will need to be linked via high level connection using speaker wires. JL Audio brought out a device called CleanSweep that supposed to allow the intergration of OEM headunit with aftermarket amps/speakers but it was still piss poor and was a flop.

Question

it looks like some $$$ has gone into that setup there peppernick... but is there really gonna be much sound difference between your setup and say the logic pro 7 setup (or hi-fi or whatever the extra option is) - i've heard people say that is the dogs danglies (hell, the stock system sounds pretty good to me, and i love my music!)

or are you one of these people that likes to have enough bass to chuck the back of the car out while driving in a straight line?

I know a lot of people who love their music, but they are all not neccessarily into Hi-Fidelity.

I'm not all about bass, I'm into clarity. I love to hear every instrument playing and when I close my eyes, I want to be able to envisage the band playing right in front of me. There are plenty of times where I choose a track just to listen to a section of it where I like how the music is played, even though I'm not interested in the entire track.

Sound quality is very subjective, it all depends on what your ears tell you. IMO, the stock system is pants, the Logic7 is better but not worth what you pay for it. Still, it can sound a lot better with a good aftermarket set-up.

If people are keen to keep the standard head unit, there is a new processor on the market in the shape of the Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.2 which accepts the high level input from the factory HU or amp, and very effectively cleans up the signal, and also has a 31 band Q per channel, crossover and time alignment etc.

We have fitted a few in DB9s and recently in an E46 CSL and it works very well indeed. The factory HU does have a rather high noise floor, which is more evident when you amplify it, but the pros very much outweigh the cons.

I'll be fitting a Double DIn touchscreen navi system though!

Any update on this?

Should be getting my car in the next week or so and I'm keen to upgrade speakers etc. ( made a mistake and should have gone for hifi/logic 7 option!)

Surely replacing the standard speakers would have some impact on sound quality?

Slowly but steadily. Waiting for the rest of my equipment to arrive.

Over the past week, we've managed to hide the control panel for my sound processor away in the ashtray compartment.

STOP STOP STOP!!!

All this is very nice and if I had lots of £££ to upgrade it would be wonderful!

BUT...

Can anyone recommend a cheapish alternative to upgrading the stock audio system to improve sound quality?

I so wish I had ticked the HIFI OPTION!!
