HIDs must have washers and self-levelling since 2010 by law. So factory HID lights will always have washers and levellers since 2010. But older cars may not have them.

But an excerpt from summary of MOT rules 2012 says:

"HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high, so they may be (if light output exceeds 2000 lumens) fitted in conjunction with headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted the tester will switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted.

The car will fail if a headlamp levelling or cleaning device is inoperative or otherwise obviously defective"

They don't give a date threshold, so post 2010 cars with good, well aimed, correct colour, aftermarket HID kits will still get away with no washers or levelling.

I must admit I don't like using my headlight washers as one doesn't go down properly sometimes so I just switch my lights off for a sec, spray and then put them back on so the headlight washers don't come up.

If you remove the correct fuse then yes only the headlight washers will stop working.

There will be no fault displayed.

I disabled mine with the Carley for BMW app. Nice and easy, and quickly reversible should the need arise.

I'd love to disable mine .... if I had them, after the freezing weather it caused mine to freeze partially out..... didn't think too much about it till one fell out completely.
I took the other out as a precaution till the freezing weather went.. pushed it back in but can't have been "clicked in place" as after a few days this one also fell out somewhere.
Now I'm awaiting some China specials to arrive as BMW parts are an absolute rip off
