How to turn off radio w/Idrive
ok... pressing the volume knob only turns the cars stereo system into mute.
I want to "TURN OFF" the radio, So how do you turn off the radio? I want the radio to stop recieving signals. instead of having the radio to work constantly recieving signals and me just having it on mute, makes no sense. Same for CD and Aux, how do you turn the system off. OR is it permanantly on, and has to be on? if thats the case, its a very stupid design. 20 years ago, cars allowed you to turn off electronics, no wonder bmw electronics are horrible, if they have to be on all the time, everything will break. same with the HVAC, auto has to turn on the A/C .. wtf maybe someone can enlighten me |

Powering a device on and off can actually be more taxing on the electronics than running them constantly. Not sure if that's the case here, but I doubt the way our radios function would actually lead to a shorter life.

it's not really mute, it's more like sleep mode, except the screen stays on.
try this, put a cd in and let it play, press the volume button and wait like 15 seconds, then press it again and if you notice, the cd begins playing were it left off, so you didn't mute the radio, you really did turn it off "technically speaking". i know the little speaker with a bar going across it shows up, but that's the icon bmw chose.

Yes, the "off" knob is more of a "mute." This is different than most cars, but isn't an issue for the other 99.999999% of us.

I can somewhat relate to the OP annoyance. I kinda hate the BMWs electronics sometimes. |

ok, fine, but its also the 99.99999% saying dont own a bmw past warranty. these are the reasons these cars are considered not reliable. |

I'm not an audiophile but I know that my Onkyo home theater receiver at home sounds the best after it has been on for a period of time warmed up. You can look at electronics like a diesel... Sometimes is just better to leave it running. I'm sure turning your plasma TV on and off over and over would induce more wear and tear then just allowing it to run like designed. I've never had a problem with electronics taking a crap, 'while' they are running. Its when I go turning them on or off that I've occasionally had an issue.
