Ticking Valve? Video Included (Update)
Sounds like I have the common ticking valve issue. The video makes a pretty convincing point. What do you guys think, do I have to set up another trip to the dealer?
After about 2 hours of sitting: Update: Engine at operating temperature (warm): Update 2 - After lifters were replaced: Even after the warranty work the engine sounds EXACTLY the same. Could someone who had the entire head replaced with the updated design post of video of the engine idling??!?! I want to know if this is normal or not! Even with the warm engine it still sounds like I have an issue. I would be really sweet if someone who have had the new head swapped through warranty would post a vid of their smooth idling engine to compare?!?! PS: I am aware of my broken head bolt, another thing I need to get fixed hopefully under the CPO warranty. Last edited by Volasko; 06-14-2012 at 06:23 PM.. |

it sounds normal to me.
this is the ticking that can be fixed by replacing the cylinder head: I used to have that sound every morning. Sound is nonexistent since I got it done (knock on wood*) if you could get your cylinder head replaced with a redesigned one, I suggest you do it just in case you have problems when your warranty ends.

I'm well past my warranty and really haven't had an issue with my engine. I've heard some ticking on a cold start some days when its around 40*F or below but it smooths out after it warms up. Doesn't really bug me anymore, not losing any performance so it doesn't bug me.
Then again, I came from an '05 6MT 330Ci Coupe that had the lightweight flywheel that loved the Chatter like a mofo no matter what temp it was outside and lifter tick when the oil wasn't in the right place after some autox so noises like that are pretty well known territory for me.

Now that I'm home and listening to the videos, you guys DEFINITELY have it worse than I've ever heard it coming from my engine. I was thinking it could be a build date issue but then I realized Alvine90 is in an '08 so it couldn't be related to that.
Have you guys owned these cars from day one? The previous owner on mine had it as a lease and I can tell (apart from trying to cover up that it was in a minor accident that wasn't reported to carfax, jackhole) he probably never really rev'd the piss out of the motor like I do (after it reaches operating temps).

honestly, that doesn't problematic (but its hard to tell from the video), and it may be a bit louder with the engine cover off..
was the engine cold when you made the vid, or completely warmed up? |

This was just after I swapped my plugs so the engine had been sitting for a few hours while I detailed the car and swapped the plugs. It wasn't cold out but it did not have a chance to reach full operating temperatures.

Maybe I should search, but is there a complete kit being sold to fix this? Is there a DIY anywhere, with the cost? Thanks
and aside from the noise I'm guessing it's not bad for the engine correct? Thanks |

I thought the only fix was to get the updated head designed after they realized their mistake. Which is only done with a warranty because I bet it is really $$!
