Hi,

I purchased a 330D M-Sport coupe from Stratstone BMW Derby a couple of months ago. A condistion of the sale was that two of the wheels were refurbished, which they were.

Recently when washing the car, I found the paint coming off one of the wheels with the jetwash. This was one of the wheels that was not refurbished as condition of sale.

I took it to a reputable wheel refubisher, who told me that the paint was coming off as it had been refurbished before, but to a poor standard, hence the paint coming off. Not only that, but all of the wheels had been done before, and one was a different colour to the other 3 (hypersilver rather than silver).

I thought this may be covered on my warranty - but no, its down to the dealer.

So, I have to travel all the way back to Derby from Milton Keynes for them to have a look.

Any thoughts on where I stand on this?

I had something similar, my wheels had the paint coming off and I spoke to my local dealer and they said they had a crap refurb on them all. Got them to laise with the dealer I bought it from and we settled on me paying £100 towards getting all 4 wheels refurbed at the local dealer. Once they have been refurbed I had to take them back as they has also done a crap job!! they did it again and all ok

Its not just me then.

I think they get the mobile guys out to do them, whereas the local place to me strips them right back, and take 3 days to do it.

The difference in time spent is clear after a couple of weeks.

Some mobile guys can do a good job. It all comes down to the prep, the correct paint, enough heating between coats with heat lamps and spraying whilst the ambient temperature is hot enough.

I had a wheel done on my E46. It was a very small scuff but even I couldn't spot the repair when it was done or months later during the winter months.
I was only charged £20 which was excellent value for money.

Had 5 wheel resprays by a dealer recently for exactly that problem. Should you need advice pm me and I'll talk you through how I got dealer to sort out

I actually wish SH car dealers would leave minor scuffs on the wheel. It seems that these days people want no marks at all on any car they buy, the result being hashed halfway resprays and wheel refurbs that actually look worse than a small mark on the OE finish, quite quickly.

IMHO the only sort of wheel refurb worth doing is sandblasting the whole thing then powder coating it, which takes a while and certainly can't be done on your drive - some mobile services don't even take the tyre off! Even then the colour is often not OE and the finish does not last as long.

I personally would find your most reputable local wheel refurbishing specialist and get all 4 done properly. For the fuss and hassle it would be to get money out of Stratstone you'll have lost 6 months and got frustrated about your car not looking as it should. I used the Wheel Specialist and they are a proper outfit where they grit blast off original paint to prep the surface and then powder coat the wheels. Takes a day and should last you for years. Reckon on maybe £75 per wheel maybe.
