Best way to sell a car-

Looking to sell my '06 330i (not here) and noted that eBay seems to not work that well for these cars- tons of dealers, and when I search "completed" it seems that most of the prices(bids) are somewhat comical.
Most of the cars in my range are in the $32-38,000 range and the bids are in the
$15-20,000 range.
Seems like eBay and the like can be tough for "expensive", but not rare, cars.
Any ideas?

I think the best way for you to sell your car is to put it on www.cars.com and on the local newspaper. I sold my car 1995 Ford mustang Cobra( 692rwhp 351w twin turbo) for $18,000. That is an insane amount for that car, because i bought it new for $24,000. SO give it a try, i think it costs $40 to post it with 3 pictures.

the best way to sell is to know whats the lowest price you can possible live with...

the process is to

1. bring it to CarMax (to see the wholesale price)
2. look at simliar cars like yours that recently sold at ebay (to see what they have sold for)
3. get the average price at cars.com of simliar cars (to set your price competatively)

once the lowest price acceptable is set and advertise it about $1-2 higher, knowing you will get counter offers. folks always like to undercut the sell price.

Do not discuss prices over the phone, but only after you see them in person and with a test drive.
Thats where you release the drop-bomb lowest price you'll take, be ready to walk or be ready with a contract to take a non-refundable deposit.

good luck!

I know people who have had success with Craig's List...and it's free.

I've actually had the most success listing my cars in the free sites! When I sold my '95 3000GT I listed it on autotrader.com and in their magazine, and on the 3oooGT forums, and ended up selling it off the forums. So when I sold my '94 TT stealth I just listed it on the Forums and sold it there, too. Both times I got decent money. For my '05 tacoma I listed it in the local paper, on cars.com, and on craigslist... ended up selling it on craigslist and got full asking $ for it.

CRAIGSLIST.ORG!!!!!!
I put ads on cars.com which i paid for (~$40 I think, you could renew it every month until it sells, local paper which I also paid for and it expired after 7 days ($100) and craigslist. I got the most responses from craigslist, and although you have to renew the add every week it is free and gets a pretty decent amount of traffic.
Try it out, can't hurt

I sold my last car with craiglist and the one before that with autotrader. Both sold relatively quickly and close to the blue book. One higher and one lower.

Actually, I go the reverse route.. cars.com and eBay. I don't go to CarMax just to price the car but rather use them as a backstop in case my car doesn't sell by the time my new one comes in.

CarMax buy offers are a little below wholesale KBB or Edmunds, but still more than a dealer will give on a trade. If you price with CM, they give you X price. Come back in two weeks they will give you a MUCH lower offer. So I don't think its a good idea to go there if you might need them to take your car off your hands in an emergency.

Selling

I don't even know what CarMax is- I can pretty much figure it out, obviously. I don't know if they are in New England. I'm not desperate, so I won't go that route.
I've sold quite a few cars on eBay (just personal vehicles) but they've always been under $15K.
Those are excellent suggestions; Thanks.

+1 for Craiglist. Use it a lot.

Selling a car you will definitely be targetted by scammers. The usual scam is that they will offer to buy the car sight unseen, send you a check for the full amount plus some. You are supposed to wire back the difference etc etc.

Of course their cashiers check is a very good fake and will be returned after you have already wired the difference.

I have sold a car on Craigslist. Took about 3 weeks.
