Sway bar talk. Rear sway necessary?
Im looking into purchasing a rear sway bar. I thought it only makes big differences in japanese cars, but after seeing stock rear sway bar specs for our E90s, I now think I really need one. 13mm is not gonna cut it. H&R's 20mm sounds much better.
Question is, is it really worth it? I did a research and most people liked it. Can you guys help me list pros/cons of thicker rear sway bar? Pros: -More towards neutral steering -Less body roll(?) -tighter rear end feeling, but tail could slide out easier. Cons: -Slightly harsh ride feeling over stock What else?

I'm not sure there are any cons other than it actually costing money? My question is, why not get both?
Harsher ride? Nah. Springs might do that, but not swarbars. Is it worth it? I haven't had my 335i long enough to do any mods (a week), but on cars that i have put swarbars on, it's definitely worth the money.

The rear sway bar is awesome. Ive felt NO negatives since getting it. It made a huge difference by itself even before I got new suspension.

H&R rear sway is fantastic on its own. amazing difference. sharper turn in and the car feels more point and shoot - get spacers too (15mm) and it'll complete it for sure. see my post on how the spacers look on a stock setup -http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58779

Pros: Less sway
Cons: Yes, ride is slightly more stiff since side-to-side compliance is reduced by connecting either side with a more rigid bar. When the left side hits a little bump, the right side will be affected more. |

The only draw back i can see is the price of installation. On the e90 it take a lot effort. But it's still worth it and the ride is nice.

My rear was $425 installed. It was a lot of work but took only an hour or so, maybe a bit more, I cant really remember.

Definitely think it's worth it, makes the ride more crisp and you can dial out that built in under steer for an even neutral setup, as if the car wasn't neutral enough from the factory.

the prices can vary from shop to shop... the high's have been lower 400s... and the lows have been around 300. you also have to factor in alignment (if its included yae! if not boo!)

I've ordered the H&R rear sway for the E90. thanks for all the opinions guys.
just4kickz, why do you need an alignment after sway bar installation?

hey guys!
BMW warranty labor rate for the R&R of the rear swaybar is 2.6hrs. Customer pay can be anywhere from 2.6-5,2hours depending on where you go. The rear springs and left control on wheel carrier have to be removed and unfortunately, the rear subframe has to be dropped or lowered to remove the rear swaybar. |

We have yet to do any suspension work on an E90/E92. We really want to do one as well because we have to know if it's also going to be worth it for us.
If anyone would like a labor quote for struts/springs and swaybars please PM me. |

Lux, if you are saving up for the M I would consider holding off on serious mods like this. Then again, if you mod enough you may not want the new M!

Then I looked at the timeline, realized that I will at least have the car for more than 6 months before I get the M3 in my garage, so why not enjoy it while it lasts.

My 2 cents. My non ZSP E90 328 went from being one type of a machine to a very different (read greatly improved) driving experience with changing to a ZSP suspension (picked up the shocks/struts and springs used for about $200 - couldn't pass up the deal compared to any other aftermarket set-up) and adding H&R rear anti-sway. Turns are flat and the wheel much more lively - no oversteer - just more responsive...what I consider "neutral" - felt there was a bit of understeer before. I'd recommend thinking through if you are going to be swapping out suspension and sway in the future and trying to do both at the same time....it will save on labor costs since the rear suspension comes off to put on rear sway(said the BMW tech who did the labor for me). Also, you have to disconnect brake lines and bleed system...good time to think over SS braided lines as well.
I did all 3 of the above. Used ZSP suspension 225, H&R rear anti sway 150, SS brake lines 90 and 850 for labor to do all the above and alignment by my dealer....I was able to negotiate a labor rate of$70 hour for the work. Bottom line....totally different car - flat in turns, more lively. Not harsh at all, in fact, I think the ride is nicer....more controlled and refined and responsive. Do it!!
