Used BMW 330i 2006 for 19k, worth it?
Hi everybody,
Before you go crazy, I know there are a million of these threads but they are outdated, and I have a couple questions that are unanswered. I go back to forum threads in '07, '08, '09 about people asking the same questions about the 330i and it's crazy how much used car values went up recently. In '08 some guy bought a 330i with 40k miles for like $18k. Now I can't find a damn 330i for under $16k. Anyway, I'm looking at a used 2006 330i with one accident RWD black/black with sports, premium, and navi. Basically fully loaded with 55,800 miles in Westchester County, NY for $19.5k. Did used car prices really inflate like this or am I getting ripped off? I have a full-time internship for the summer and go away to school the rest of the year, so working on the car is almost impossible. Should I just pass this car or try to buy? My only other option is buying an '08 TL or leasing a car with monthly payments AKA only being able to lease a VW Driving school car= BMW X3 (I know don't ask me how...) First car for 3 yrs= 1996 Nissan Quest Current car (lease ending soon) = 2010 Acura TSX 2.4L I never really paid attention to the performance of german cars, but after I drove a lot of my friends and people at work, I realized how subpar japanese cars are. My friends '04 BMW 330Ci feels tighter and drives better than my 2010.... Thank you |

I hear ya... may I suggest you keep the TSX for now, save up a bit over a few years and then get yourself a decent 335. If you step up to the 325, you'll definitely be wanting a lot more - especially if you end up spending time on this forum. The 328 is decent if you get it with the sport package. Sport is the foundation to everything else in the BMW world.

Like they say once you own a BMW, you'll never switch... but once you drive a BMW, you never want to get in another car again Also, you're right about the sports package... I feel like BMWs look naked without it! |

No laws at all. I am 20 and in college. I have had 3 bmw's (530,330,335) before and I currently drive one now(328).
I also have a lease on a vw. DO NOT DO IT. Take the bus instead, but dont lease the vw. It isnt a bad car but it isnt going to be any better than your acura. Good Luck on finding the right car. Btw mine is for sale if you are interested |

The ONLY reason that price is too high is because it's got an accident on it, IMO. I spent about 3 months looking for an 06' 330 and at least from my experience, searching country-wide, you're not going to find one that's actually in great condition, with lower mileage (under 60k miles), for less than probably $18,000 (and even that's going to be pushing it). I don't know what all the posters above me are talking about...even private sale there were none to be had at those ridiculously low prices (14 or 15k) unless you wanted one with no sport/premium package and over 80k miles.
I ended up flying to Illinois to get mine last month. Fully loaded, great condition both in and out, 53k miles, for $19.5. This price was comparable or lower to most of the other 330's I had looked at which weren't in anywhere near as good condition. |

If you're gonna drop 20k, you wanna be with a car that isn't gonna cost a ton and is fun maybe look at a gti or gli. Of course all of the e90's are great but they'll be more to own in every way. If you blindly don't care about cost to own I'd suggest that link to the M3. All that said, German is the only way to go on 4 (or 2) wheels.

Hind sight is 20/20! I was thinking the other day about the money I've thrown away on cars in the last decade (I'm 30). Despite wishing "I'd just bought that e430 in college", I wouldn't change a thing. I have learned and experienced so much from the ups and downs. Go with your gut (but for you're fellow Americans be financially responsible).

I agree with Hockeydude35. That accident is an issue - yet the car is priced like a pristine example. The price, well, that is what they're going for these days. (Used car prices are up after the 2008 crash) Is this a private sale or a dealer? Real BMW dealer or a general used car shop?
I paid about 19k for a 2006 330xi from an actual BMW dealer last year. Great condition, and they did a bunch of free work: brake pads + rotors (all 4 wheels) a new tire, paint correction. Warranty for 60 days, during which time I got a new battery. I do feel like I overpaid a bit - but I also got a lot of value and confidence with this car. I recall at the time looking up KBB and NadaGuides.com pricing and finding it was fairly close to the pricing on my car. You can also use cars.com and or autotrader.com to price out comparable examples in a nationwide search. There are better deals to be had out there, but they're going to be of the private party variety, and you're going to have to look for them. Perhaps you'll find one here on this board. In terms of choosing a car, a 330 is a good choice. It's a fast, reliable and luxurious car. I would not buy an 328 unless I were getting a significantly newer car. A 330 has much more stock equipment (xenons, etc), is faster than a 328, and has bigger brakes to boot! I would not buy an older M3 or something like that due to cost of ownership. I don't know if a GLI/GTI will be less to own in the long term, but it sure won't be a sexy inline six! Of course, it should be said: going into college, not going to drive the car that much? Maybe you should buy a 10 year old accord... I waited until a few years after graduation for mine.... |
