Thanks dude. I just got home from work and saw how it looks after the first two coats of clearcoat. It's perfect. I have no idea where I worked on the wheel, and no idea which areas/spokes were painted silver by looking at the wheels. Absolute perfection..

I touched up a few spots I thought needed more clearcoat. It's really hard to tell where you've coated and haven't coated though.. Think I got it all though. One "money" coat after this and they are done..

Can you list the product numbers for the Duplicolor stuff you purchased? Your repair job turned out great and I would love to do this on the few little nicks on my 162s but I haven't been able to find a good paint match. It looks like the Duplicolor paint matches perfectly. Thanks!

Yep. Will do when I get home. I'm at work. Pics are on my laptop, I gotta boot it up, throw pics on a thumb drive, get it to my work computer and I'll post some final pics. Wheels are inside my house now to cure for the next two days. Will wax tomorrow night.. They came out awesome. I cannot tell where I painted and fixed the wheels at all, and either can my gf. She was amazed and couldn't stop saying how well they came out/brand new they look.. :rocks:

They look good. I'm still waiting for more details on the cleaning / prep work you did. Do I need to wash my rims like 10 times to get the paint and Bondo to stick, or what? This will be my first time doing this.

Found it..

Prep work -

First, clean wheels well with Dawn. Then I used some of the spirits stuff on the area I was working on. Then I used Isopropyl which I am more familiar and comfortable. I cleaned with white cotton cloths until nothing came off anymore. Make sure the tires are covered at this point, becuase they have an infinite amount of dirt associated with them..

Keep cleaning until nothing comes off anymore.. You'll just know I guess. Same after sanding.. Keep cleaning with isopropyl wipes until nothing comes off. You can wipe with the white cloth and it'll still be perfectly clean. Again, you almost just know when you're at that point.

Again, with all of the advice I have given in the thread, this is how I did it. It may or may not be right. I would run your ideas by Paul as well, as he is the one who originally posted the DIY.. I would get a few points of view.. Just a disclaimer. I don't want something I say to ruin your wheels..

Thanks for the advice, Josh, and no problem on the potential of ruining my wheels. I'm already taking that risk by doing this myself. I figure I'll just buy a couple of new rims if I completely destroy these, and chalk it up as a learning experience.

I have an idea for you. Get a random scrap block of aluminum. Gouge it on a curb. Perform the entire process. If you are happy with the results, move to your wheel..

This way worst case scenario, you mess up a scrap block of aluminum and throw it out.. Not a $400 rim or whatever they cost..

Put on my 161's for the "summer". I was going home to see my family and wanted them on..

In the sunlight the duplicolor paint is a very small shade off.. I'd say the match was 97%.. I'm going to check the wurth website often, and order some up and repaint them once I can get some..

For now the match is extremely close. With some brake dust you can't tell at all, and it of course looks better than road rash. I don't think most people besides me would really notice. But I wanted to put the info out here..

Meh,
Josh

PS. I think I'm happy with the MTEC foglights..

Thanks, Josh. It looks like the Wurth paint is still out of stock indefinitely. I got the Dupli-Color paint yesterday but won't be able to work on the wheels for a while, with my schedule. Luckily, my winter tires (Dunlop M3 DSST) seem to handle nicely in the warmer weather, too. I miss 18" and 162s on this car, though.

In a few weeks, once I get to the rims, I'll do my best to feather the paint and hopefully get a decent blend.

Honestly.. just wait for wurth.. Or do a sample piece first to see what you think...

dude, good work on your alum pedals and curb rash fixing.

I do have a guestion on your curb rash fixing. Yes, I did read every single post in here. I am interesting in how you apply the clear coat. When it is time to apply the clear coat, do you apply the clear coat to only the surface area that got new paint or do you apply the clear coat to the whole rim?

As for the pedals, I think I like them. I too have the Aluminum interior and I think those pedals would compliment it well. Very nice.

I really like those 328i sport package wheels. I wish those would be standard on all 328's to make the car look better than those crappy 16's.

I applied mainly to that area, but I did feather it out more than I did the silver coat. You can feel where it is smooth and not smooth, so you know what areas need it and don’t need it pretty easily..
