I live in Seattle and commute to Redmond. Have 3 cars, 2 of which are AWD (wife drives one of those). I will be using one of my other cars to drive to Crystal on weekendS to take my daughter skiing

I'm thinking about whether to mount snow tires for a few months on the BMW -- it seems crazy since there will be at most 1 or 2 times that it snows in the Seattle area. However, If I get caught out at work with the 330i and it snows midday, I'm pretty much hosed. I'm curious if people in these parts tend to mount them or just risk it.

If your staying on main roads it is completely fine. I didn't need winter tires last winter but I did have some problems on some hills in my small neighborhood.

Before my XI....I had the 335i + Summer tires and I got caught in a couple snow storm in the Everett area and guess what?....got stuck...car didn't move ONE inch! One time I walked home (I was close enough) and one time I left the car there and got picked up.

I don't have any problems with the XI even though I'm on Summer Tires ( Michelin Pilot Sports 2)...if you can afford some winter tires OR maybe some good All Seasson tires...you should do it.
Not only you can get stuck, but can endanger your life and others.

Nope, still not mounting snows. Basically, if conditions are such that the 335i needs winter tires, I don't drive it. I have two other vehicles to choose from. And frankly, I'd rather risk either of those than the E90. Too many idiots out there that have no clue what they are doing. "Hey, I've got an SUV, I can drive 90 MPH on this solid sheet of ice, no problem!" It's no wonder that most of the stuck, crashed or otherwise FUBAR'd vehicles on the road are 4x4/AWD SUVs. Retards.....




BUT, if I didn't have other vehicles to choose from, and the E90 was my only car, I'd sure as heck have winter tires on already.

Never really had the need... It only really gets nasty a few times a year and it doesnt last very long. You just need to adjust your driving style and you will be fine.

I just bought some Blizzaks for a winter set for the xi. I wasn't going to do it, but now that I found out I'm moving to Ohio soon - I'm gonna be putting them to good use. So here's to hoping we get a few blizzards in Seattle this winter so I can get some good use out of them before I leave.

We have the stock 17" all season RFTs in the winter and 19" performance summers the rest of the year on the 328xi. We have the stock 18" performance tires on the E92 M3 and they absolutely sucked this weekend. In fact, the M3 stayed home after Friday night and the 328xi came out. Unfortunately we are trying to sell the 328xi and it looks SOOOO much better with the 19s, I hadn't put the stock 17s on yet. But, the war dept hasn't mentioned any problems with getting around. She drives from Maple Valley to Bellevue.

The M3 won't come back out of the garage until the Dunlop M3s are on it.

Here's a couple pictures of an e93 328i that got stranded in front of my house this morning. Wearing all season radials, couldn't get up 35th Ave heading up towards Yesler. From the tracks, you can see that the driver lost momentum and drifted back down, almost into that telephone pole behind the car, and just said the heck with it. The car is now accumulating snow.

Yesterday on my way home from work, it was nasty in north Kirkland and I was heading down a pretty long, moderately steep hill and there was a guy in an X5 behind me that bounced off the curb the entire way down the hill - over and over and over... I seriously have no idea how he managed to do that, that's a pretty capable car and he was driving very slow. I didn't see what sort of wheel/tire combination he had though. I was just cringing thinking about those poor wheels on the right side of his car, they must be destroyed.

I know I don't live in western Washington, but Portland is close. I live south of the city in the hills at about 700 feet. It can be raining downtown and snowing at my house. What makes it worse is that they do not sand or plow my hilly neighborhood. I bought a set of 161 take offs this summer and put my 156 All Seasons for the winter. After a few days I decided that it was time to dump the AS tires. I'm going to be skiing this winter so it is worth getting a set of winter shoes. I also look forward to improved ice handling which is typically a bigger problem in the Portland area. As we all know X Drive improves snow traction and handling, but doesn't do sh*t for stopping. A delivery truck was stuck sideways across one of the roads down from the hill for 3 days. Bizzaks go on tomorrow. The local Firestone dealer is matching Tire Rack's price.
