Need help, bad wheel bearing?
Hey guys, I have a 335 xdrive with 45k on it and I’ve been observing what sounds like a bad, front wheel bearing, which sounds like a deflated tire almost. My tires are new (9000mi) and they are proper psi… tires are kumho ecsta 4x… Do wheel bearings on xdrive go bad early? What else can this be? I can’t record it cause you won’t hear it, but it is annoying. My rotors are pretty warped and are due for service; can they make noise like that?

Tip: Your original post was only 3 hours old. Give members more time to respond, especially during the week when most of us are working.
With that said, I have not seen many bad wheel bearings on these cars, RWD or AWD, however, members have needed to replace them. Therefore, is it a common problem? No. Is it possible? Yes. If you suspect a bad wheel bearing (especially the front), why not drive the car down the road and turn the steering wheel left then right to load the bearing differently to see if you notice a change in the sound. That would be a tell-tale sign of a bad bearing. Furthermore you can simply jack the front of the car up and check for play. If the bearings check out, I wouldn't rule out the tires. When I was younger I worked for Goodyear for a number of years. Poor alignments ruin tires quick, and sometimes you just get a bad new tire that has significant runout. |

Hi i just went through the same problem. My front rotors/pads were overdue and it sounded like a bearing was going out. i swapped them out and my car drives like new again. no rubbing sound. my car also accelerates better. I guess the rotor/pads were dragging. the hub wasnt that easy to turn but it was turning. i have 104K KM ~61k miles. I will prob get the bearings checked out by my mechanic too. i have CPO and will prob get BMW to change them under CPO if they are worn out.

HAhah for us its the opposite. When you guys say 5000 and 7500 oil changes we Canadians go "eh?" with a confused look on our faces! lol
good luck. hopefully it fixed the problem. just an update my car still drives without the noise, so it def was the pads and rotors. |

i have replaced mine on my rear wheels.
The easiest way to identify bearing issue is if you drive to left and right on the road.Try to hear if noise is getting stronger on one side or the other. and if it is front or rear side Ussualy they are changed in pairs. If you want to identify which one it is it is always the one on the opposite side of that strange noise coming when you change your lane to left or right. To me it sounds more like you have bad discs or pads or tires ...When you have damaged bearing than it get louder and louder as you speed up after some time.... Anyhow try this and see if it will change |

best would be to visit your dealer (stealer) to check your brakes ...or any other decent shop It is very hard to sort out what is wrong if you don't feel or hear sounds or vibrations.
Good Luck |

I took my wheels off to inspect everything and everything looked fine. Other people have told me it is not the wheel bearing, because my sound goes away over 45 mph... what I noticed was that I had significant inner tire wear an these tires are only 9000 mi old... any ideas?
