Pesky Brake Dust

This car dusts soo bad it's ridiculous. After 3 days of minimal driving there is a noticeable layer of dust. My last car dusted this bad but only with my track day pads on it haha

anyways, I did some searching and just saw a bunch of threads about wheel cleaning and I don't really care much about that. What I am curious about, are products for decreasing the amount of dust that sticks to the wheels.

So far I have seen people just use wax, and have seen the PB wheel sealant recommended http://www.detailedimage.com/Poorboy...t-P40/8-oz-S1/

Has anyone tried to spray on wheel protectants, do they work at all or is waxing the wheel a better solution?

Some folks have reported good results with Armor All Wheel Protectant.

I've tried both the Armour All Wheel Protectant and Wheel Wax and they both work pretty well. The Armour All is definitely easier to apply as it it just a spray but the wax lasts longer...with wax, my daily commute of 50 miles (highway and local), it was able to keep my wheels pretty clean for about 3 weeks before i noticed a color change due to brake dusting

i know! the brake dust is terrible. i cant even go a day without clean wheels. i think im going to give the armor all a shot

For our wheels, we generally recommend using Wheel Wax brand wax. A small layer of wax will cover your wheel so that brake dust doesn't adhere to the wheel as easily. Do it every other car wash and it'll save you from cleaning your wheels every 2 days. I hear good things about Armor All Wheel Protectant as well. Detailing forum should have a bit more info

If you have no problem changing out pads (and maybe rotors) for specific use, maybe try some Akebono brake pads for day to day driving. Supposedly they put out little to no dust, no noise and slightly less initial grab for braking. Found them for the least $$ on Rockauto ($55 for fronts).

I used the armour all once and wasn't that impressed. It seemed to last a week then it started back up again. The can only lasted me for 8 wheels and i didn't even spray overkill. I have been away from my car for 2 months

and plan on picking up some wheel wax when i get back. It might be worth it so it looks good till saturday morning when i wash/vacuum/condition/clean rims. I hate cleaning my rims, only part i hate about cleaning my car

Ya cleaning wheels, depending on style can be a huge PITA lol

After these pads wear out I'm definitely getting some low dust ceramics. I kept an eye on the wheels again the past week and after three days there was a visible layer of dust lol

Any idea what rims i have? I could never find the style. Back in 09, they were the 17 inch upgrade from those ugly ass ones. I think i have 10 spokes total, cant remember since i haven't seen it lately

I've used the armor-all. It helps somewhat but not what you might hope for.

I've also experimented with cheaper things like Bug and Tar remover and quick detailer. Bug and Tar does more to clean up small deposits than repelling dust. Quick detailer...not sure if it helped much.

Easy thing to do is keep a spray bottle full of soapy water and a roll of paper towels in the garage. Between washes, I give my wheels a good spray and wipe once a week. Seems to get about 95%.

+1 on the Armor All spray. Super easy to apply, works very well and lasts.

I had white wheels and they stayed clean for about 2 weeks before the spray started to break down.

Currently testing it on Hyper-Black with great results so far.

Honestly, if you think Bimmer's brake dust is bad, try driving a Mercedes. I also have a C250 and I can tell you all my wheels turn black within a week. Not kidding.

Changing pads for a less dusty compound is another alley. Since I changed for Ceramic, dust is non-existent and pedal feel and braking power are still very good. It seems that the newer cars are delivered with a better OEM design from what I heard, if you prefer staying OEM, these parts are compatible with older models.

I'll be dealing with these pads until it's time to change them, then I will be switching to ceramics for daily use. No sense in swapping pads early just because of brake dust lol

OEM is great but not real wild about the typical BMW up charge on most items. I'm sure OEM pads from a '11 E92 are considerably more expensive than aftermarket ceramics. If there's not much of a price hike and I'm wrong, I may look into upgraded OEMs

Pads are relatively inexpensive versus other maintenance items. Swap the pads now and when you sell your car you can put the old ones back on (with a ton of pad left).

After buying any of my cars, I immedietly go to ceramic pads. They are dust free. And are just fine for our cars.
Do some reseach and you will see that you can buy different pads. I perfer HAWK ceramic pads. MAny other great makes out there.
Just do your homework and make sure that what you buy are true through and through ceramic pads and not organic pads with ceramic coating.

I do like Hawk, I may look into their ceramics then. I have used their HP+ pads for autox and they were pretty grippy but dusted like mad of course lol

Looking into pads and rotors as well. As I am tired of the brake dust, I did however notice my one front rotor slightly warped and I feel it at times during braking giving me the pulsating feel on the steering wheel.
May as well go to ceramic.
Was thinking ebc or power stop with cross drilled and slotted.
