Adding another 12v source to my 08 e92 DIY and Rant

Sorry if this has been covered but I googled and couldn't find anything.

So being pissed at BMW for wanting over 600 bucks to add sirius to my car tonight i decided to try and put my old stand alone unit it. Of course I still haven't found anywhere to mount it yet.

Let me start out by saying seriously BMW? Are you kidding me? Only 2 12v outlets in my car. 1 by the ash tray and 1 in the center arm rest (and yes i checked none under/in/around the glove box. So with my radar plugged in by the change holder I have 1. And that one in the arm rest is stupid. The power plug for the sat radio is huge and with my iPod in the holder and the arm rest wont close. Great.

So where can i get power? No easy way to really take the center storage bin apart so that I could see so I started by removing the rear trim behind it where the HVAC controls are. Just pulls right out with a little bit of force. So got the light in there started digging around and found a little connector with a red and brown wire but its buried back there a little bit on a slide mount with a chunk of plastic in the way. I tried to get it out and ended up having to break the little piece, not sure what its used for just seemed to be useless.

Plugged the radio back into the center console 12v, turned the car on and unplugged the connector that I found, and it went off! BINGO.

2 wire taps into those lines, run the power wire under the molded plastic parts in-between the carpet and wired up a new 12v lighter outlet. The unit plugged in and pushes under out of sight even before putting the trim back on!

So it took a little bit but now i have a hidden 12v source. You could easily add a switch, or put a 3 outlet socket on there too. Hope this helps someone! took a little picture came out blurry it was dark outside by the time I got it all sorted.

That's one of the only things I miss about my Volkswagen. It had like 9 12-volt sources, including one in the trunk. I agree, BMW was a bit stingy with these.
